"Hamilton’s poetry is remarkable in its longing for another world, a world in which justice is either achieved or at least possible. Hers is not simply a poetry of conscience (although it is that sometimes), but an attempt to imagine—in surreal, embodied, or abstract terms—the experience of liberation and change. These poems have the power to shock or simply hold a reader, who like an audience listening to the last notes of a musical performance, is released into an appraising silence."—Michael Witmore

"Carol Vanderveer Hamilton, who I am certain was a Romanian violinist in a past life, possesses the gift of abstracting and then making concrete the most ineffable of contemporary feelings of loss. Her brilliantly crafted and beautifully furnished poems remind me of those blood-pressure machines installed in all the new drugstores—only in her case, when the menacing clamp registers its digitized spiritual measurements, it is the planet’s homeostasis that lights up. And—aha!—at the bottom of the machine our fortune slips out. It says; 'Somewhere it must be snowing . . . past all indifference.' Yes, it’s ominous, but fellow xenophiles, it aptly sums up our situation."—Jack Myers
