Program Description
The Mellam Family Foundation provides funding for research fellowships for
students to engage in research with a Dartmouth College faculty mentor in the
area of nanotechnology. This fellowship is made available to Dartmouth
undergraduates through an award from the Mellam Family Foundation to
Professor Martin Wybourne, Vice Provost for Research and the Francis and
Mildred Sears Professor of Physics.
Awards
- $3,500 for stipend and housing costs
- Up to $500 for materials directly related to the research project
- $750 stipend for continuation of the project part-time (7-12 hours per
week) during a subsequent "on" term. Both the faculty mentor and student
must agree to continue the research.
Eligibility
- Project must be in the area of nanotechnology
- Grants are awarded for full-time research during a leave term

Research Proposal Guidelines
- State what the project is
- Explain why the project is important (e.g., how the project will contribute
to your academic development)
- Describe how your background in academics and/or other areas has prepared
you to do this project
- Discuss relevant literature and/or previous work in the area done by you
and by others
- Describe the project: what exactly are you planning to do and what is your
timetable
- Pages may be clipped together but NOT stapled or bound
Additional Information
- At the end of each term, students are expected to make an oral presentation
of their findings to the fellowship selection committee.
- A copy of a final report or thesis must be turned in to the Office of
Undergraduate Advising and Research.
- A portion of each award ($100) is withheld pending submission of the final
report/thesis.
