Beckman Scholarship

This program is on hold awaiting a decision from the Beckman Foundation on continued funding.

Purpose

The Beckman Foundation established the Beckman Scholars Program to support and promote research activities by exceptionally talented undergraduate students in chemistry and the life sciences. Dartmouth College is one of 13 institutions selected in a national competition to receive Beckman Scholar Awards.

Program Description

Beckman Scholars will participate in the program for 15 months under the supervision of a Dartmouth faculty mentor:

  • full-time in the first summer (10 weeks)
  • part-time during the subsequent academic year (10 hours per week)
  • full-time the following summer (10 weeks)

** Note that this schedule is mandated by the Beckman Foundation and is non-negotiable.

Awards

Each Beckman Scholar will receive an award of $19,300 as follows:

  • Summer funding:
    • $6,000 stipend each summer ($12,000 total)
    • $850 each summer for research travel and supplies ($1,700 total)
  • Academic year funding:
    • $4,000 stipend
    • $1,600 for travel and supplies

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have declared a major in biology or chemistry.
  • Applicants must be planning to graduate in 2009 or 2010.
  • Applicants must have a faculty research mentor from the following list:
    • Biology:  TBA
    • Chemistry:  TBA

Application Checklist

  • Application form
  • Official transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Research proposal (5 pages -- pages may be clipped together but not stapled or bound).  Proposal should address the following:
    • Description of project
    • Previous research experience
    • Academic preparation
    • Relationship of project to academic and career goals
  • Interview with the selection committee:  this will be scheduled following submission of the application materials.

Additional Information

  • During each of the summer terms, Beckman Scholars will attend the annual Beckman Symposium.  In the second summer, Beckman Scholars will have the opportunity to present their research at the symposium.
  • A progress report must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Research at the conclusion of the scholarship period.
  • Carefully consider the implications of the scholarship on your academic and career plans BEFORE you submit an application:
    • if you apply as a sophomore, you must be on a leave term during “sophomore summer” and will need to adjust your D plan accordingly (you do not need to change your D plan until you know whether you have been selected as a Beckman Scholar -- the registrar will accommodate late changes in this situation).
    • if you apply as a junior, you must remain on campus the summer after graduation to complete the second summer of the scholarship.
