How to get a major advisor: A student selects an advisor specializing in the student’s intended area of concentration from among AMES faculty members listed in the ORC or on the AMES website (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~asia/concent.html). A student may consult with either the program chair or the program administrator for suggestions of appropriate advisors.
Can one formally modify this major: A student may modify the major or minor in consultation with the advisor and with the approval of the chair.
Other information: Working with the advisor, the student should design a program of study to ensure coherence of language study, disciplinary training, and off-campus experience. Careful planning should begin in consultation with the advisor by early in the spring term of the sophomore year.

Biological Sciences

Who signs the major card: A student should meet with the member of the department whom they wish to serve as their major advisor (see entry below) to plan courses and fill out the major cards. The major advisor will initial the major cards and forward them to the Chair of the Undergraduate Committee, Professor Bickel, whose signature is required on all three cards. After approval, the Biology department will keep one signed card, forward one to the Registrar, and return one to the student via Hinman mail.
How to get a major advisor: If you are uncertain about how to choose an area of concentration or advisor, please consult the Biology department website for suggested advisors for each area (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~biology/undergrad/facultyadvisors.html) and also a description of faculty research interests (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~biology/faculty/faculty.html). All faculty in Biology serve as major advisors.

Who signs the major card: The major card must be checked by Ms. Donovan and signed by the Department Chair, currently Professor Ulrich.
How to get a major advisor: After the major card has been filed with the Registrar, the Classics faculty will assign the student who has declared a major or minor an advisor who is a regular member of the department.

Other information: Within the department there are four major tracks: Classical Languages and literature, Ancient History, Archaeology, and Classical Studies. Students contemplating an honors project during their senior year are encouraged to consult with the chair at the time they declare their major.

Other information: Start taking COLT classes as soon as possible. There are no pre-requisites for most of our classes. Taking COLT 10 first is highly encouraged, as it is prerequisite for the major. Computer Science

How to get a major advisor: Generally, any of the three faculty listed above acts as the major advisor. Students who plan on doing a senior thesis or a senior project can also be advised by the faculty member working on the project with them.

Other information: It is highly recommended that intended majors take EARS and EARS 44 and complete the chemistry and math Pre-requisites before taking EARS 34.

Economics

Who signs the major card: Any regular member of the faculty can sign the major card, unless the student is modifying the major. In that case, Professor Sacerdote must sign the card.
How to get a major advisor: Students are not assigned specific major advisors. All faculty advise students, including visiting faculty. If a student has a specific question, they should contact the Department Administrator, Ms. Pelletier.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes. This must be approved by Professor Bruce Sacerdote, who must sign any modified major card.
Other information: All the information needed to declare the major is listed in the ORC. Students should also consult the website, or obtain the brochure, which includes all the information a student needs about how to get started in the major, including information about filing the major card.

Education (minor and teacher certification)

Who signs the major card: Minor cards are signed by the department chair. Students should leave their cards with the administrator. Once the cards have been reviewed and signed, the administrator will email the student to pick them up or send them back through Hinman mail.

Engineering Sciences (Thayer)

Where to go for pre-major advice: If a student was not connected to an Engineering advisor when they first arrived at Dartmouth (based on initial declaration of interest), the student should contact the Department Administrator Jenna Wheeler, who will assign him or her a departmental advisor. This person will become the major advisor.
Who signs the major card: All major cards must be signed by an approved (full-time) member of the faculty. Generally these are the faculty members with an Arts and Sciences assignment. Some Thayer faculty advise, on an ad-hoc basis.
Can one formally modify this major: Engineering Sciences can be modified with any of the pre-approved modified majors as found in the ORC and include Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Studio Art, and Public Policy. It should be noted that you can also major in Engineering Physics and it is also allowed to create a specific modified major as long as it is approved by the Engineering Sciences chair and the modifying department chair.

English

Who signs the major card: All faculty can sign the major card. Ideally, this is the professor that the student asks to serve as his or her major advisor. It should at minimum be a faculty member that the student has studied with.
How to get a major advisor: All members of the faculty serve as major advisors. A student should ask the professor of his/her choice to serve in this capacity. It is the responsibility of the student to take this initiative. Ideally, the faculty will specialize in an area that the student is interested in.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes. This is a formal process that requires a petition, and subsequent approval by the department’s curriculum committee.

Environmental Studies

Film and Television Studies

How to get a major advisor: The department chair advises all majors. When students do a culminating project in their senior year, they are required to pick a faculty member from the department who would be an appropriate advisor for the specific project. However, for major advising, the chair is the person who handles the planning and approving of the major trajectory.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes. Questions can be addressed to the chair.
Other information: Students should read the requirements for the senior culminating experience when they are first planning on becoming a major. Students planning on being majors should try to take FS 1 as soon as possible, preferably in their first or second year. It is strongly recommended that FS 1 be taken before FS 40. FS 40 should be taken in sophomore or junior year (a student cannot get approval of their senior culminating experience proposal until they have taken FS 40).

French and Italian

Students can also contact the Chair, Professor Lynn Higgins (French) for more in-depth conversations about courses of study. The department welcomes these inquiries.
Who signs the major card: The major advisor
How to get a major advisor: There is an official department advisor for the French major and another for the Italian major. These were not yet assigned at the time of publication, so contact Ms. Peper, the Department Administrator, for more information.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes, by filing a replacement major card. This should be done in consultation with the major advisor.
Other information: Students should think about off-campus study as they plan their major. Read the ORC to find out which courses are prerequisites for off-campus study. Some off-campus courses fulfill major prerequisites, and others can be counted towards the major.  See also Romance Languages major (below).

Geography

German Studies

Who signs the major card: Normally the Chair, Professor Gerd Germunden, but in his absence any member of the faculty can sign.
How to get a major advisor: There is no fixed process for this. As a small department with classes normally under 20 students, majors know the faculty well and all faculty advise all students.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes
Other information: There are no special requirements for starting the major, though because there are several options for the major, a student should discuss with a member of the faculty what track most suits the student’s interest. Further, many majors are double majors, and the faculty can help discuss how to best combine German Studies with a second interest. The German FSP is highly recommended for the major. All faculty are ready to help students with course and major planning.

Government

Where to go for pre-major advice: Professors Daryl Press and Lucas Swaine serve as faculty contacts for sophomore advising before a student declares. A list of faculty advising fields are listed on the Government department’s website. A student may also contact Christine Gex or Kathy Donald (the department administrators) for information, and they can make referrals to the appropriate faculty for further inquiries.
Who signs the major card: Any full time tenure track faculty member can sign the major card. Students should vet their cards with Ms. Gex first, to make sure all the major requirements have been met.
How to get a major advisor: Student should discuss this with a member of the faculty in office hours or by appointment. Students are advised to select a faculty member whose overall interests appear most relevant. Faculty areas of research and teaching can be accessed by examining their course offerings, the descriptions of their areas of expertise, and their publication records – all on the department website. Ms. Donald and Ms. Gex can also assist in the selection of a major advisor.
Can one formally modify this major: No. One can neither modify Government nor have Government as a modification to another major. Though one can use Government courses in a non-specific modified major. Consult the ORC for more information. A student may want to consider a Government minor.
Other information: The faculty advisor may have important advice concerning the progression in which courses should be taken.

History

Where to go for pre-major advice: Professors David Lagomarsino and Margaret Darrow serve as faculty contacts for sophomore advising before a student declares. A student can approach any faculty member in their area of interest for advising. A student may also contact Gail Vernazza, the Department Administrator, who can make further referrals.
Who signs the major card: All members of the faculty advise and any faculty advisor can sign the major card. However, modified and double major cards must be signed by Department Chair Professor David Lagomarsino, or Vice Chair Professor Margaret Darrow.
How to get a major advisor: A student chooses their own faculty advisor, but it is the student’s responsibility to take initiative to ask their favorite history professor, or failing that, by approaching the chair, vice chair, or department administrator. Ideally, a student should do this before 3:30 PM on the day major cards are due at the Registrar’s office.
Can one formally modify this major: Yes
Other information: History students should make use of the schedule of courses listed on the department website. One long-range issue a student should keep in mind is what senior seminar (History 96: variable topics) they will take, and contact the professor well in advance to secure a spot, since space in these often runs out.

Jewish Studies (minor only)

How to get a minor advisor: Students can contact the chair and will be directed to advisors in their particular field of interest.
Other information: A Jewish Studies minor includes courses in religion, literature and history as well as one of the big historical surveys. Beyond that students tend to focus in one of the areas noted above and we advise them based on that stated interest.

Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies (LALACS)

How to get a major advisor: The chair serves as major advisor for all students.
Can one formally modify this major: Currently, one can only modify the LACS major with Latino Studies (LATS). The LACS major cannot be modified with other departments or programs

Linguistics and Cognitive Science

Who signs the major card: Anyone on the steering committee can sign a major card. These include professors Ioana Chitoran, Rick Granger, Jim Moor, David Peterson, and Adina Roskies.
How to get a major advisor: Whoever signs a student’s major card becomes the major advisor.
Can one formally modify a Linguistics major: Yes
Can one formally modify a Cognitive Sciences major: No
Other information: Majors are encouraged to pursue research opportunities available on campus during their junior year (this usually needs to be set up during the sophomore year). For Cognitive Science students, this usually means working in a lab with a PBS or Neukom faculty member. For linguistics students, this usually means being a research assistant (or Presidential Scholar) for one of the Linguistics faculty.

Other information: The culminating experience is offered in the winter term as either Spanish 80 or 81, alternating years. The culminating experience is recommended in the senior year, however it is permitted to take it in the junior year. In order to have another course serve as the culminating experience, the student must petition the department with a solid academic reason. Can one formally modify this major: No. The WGST major cannot be modified. Other majors can be modified with WGST.
Other information: A student is advised to read the WGST program intro in ORC. WGST also requires majors to fill out a supplemental form available in the program office, and on the bulletin board outside the WGST office.
