June 2007 Trips

Student Trip

Amy Quan Quan ‘09 and Ray Rodriguez ’09 will lead the Tucker-sponsored student trip to Hands On Gulf Coast in Biloxi, MS. Amy is a Biology and Psychology double major in EKT. Ray is a Sociology major involved with SA, GSA, and the Admissions Office. "The work is not done. Although you no longer see the tragic images on TV, the houses, the streets, the businesses...they stand empty today. We want to help the people move back into their homes. That's why we are going back to the Gulf Coast."

Alumni and Faculty/Staff Trip

Rev. Dr. Stuart Lord, Dean of the Tucker Foundation, Frederica Ghesquiere '04, and Stan Colla ‘66/Tuck ‘86 will lead an Alumni/ae, Staff and Faculty Team to Biloxi, MS to volunteer with Hands On Gulf Coast. Rev. Dr. Stuart C. Lord was appointed as Dean of the Tucker Foundation and Associate Provost of Dartmouth College in August 2000. He was most recently appointed Acting Vice President of Institutional Diversity in 2007. Since his arrival at Dartmouth, Lord has furthered opportunities for character development as well as heightened awareness of civic responsibility by matching Dartmouth's resources to the needs of local and global communities. Freddi double majored in Religion and Environmental Studies. She joined the Peace Crops upon her graduation and served as an Environmental Education volunteer in the Philippines. She is currently working in Hanover at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and is also working with the Deep Community Program and the Lwala Clinic Project as the Volunteer Coordinator. Stan is a former Vice President of Alumna Relations. “This is an opportunity for Dartmouth alumni and staff to engage in Gulf Coast relief work using a model similar to the student trips.” [ More information about the Alumni, Staff, and Faculty Trip]

March 2007 Trips

The Tucker Foundation commends the student leaders of the 9 Katrina Education and Service Trips going to the Gulf Coast this March. We wish to extend our gratitude towards their fundrasing and awareness building efforts as well as the support of the entire Dartmouth community.

Severinghaus Killeen

Elysa Severinghaus '09 and Dan Killeen '09 will lead a student-initiated team consisting of members of Coed, Fraternity, and Sorority (CFS) organizations to Hands On Gulf Coast in Biloxi, MS.  “We will be involved in construction, community building and social justice outreach and look forward to working together to contribute to the great continuing projects of Hands On!”

Mahr Donnelly

Nicole Mahr '07 and Elisa Donnelly '07 will lead a Navigators team to TouchGlobal at Trinity Church in Covington, LA. Nicole was in the Gulf Coast last year with the Navigators, and Elisa spent her off term doing relief work in Louisiana last winter. “We look forward to going back.”

Iqbal Musah

Danish Iqbal '09 and Habiba Musah '08 will lead an Al-Nur team with Islamic Relief based out of New Orleans. “We wish to create a strong group dynamic within Al-Nur dedicated to service.”

Lou Merten

Cary Lou ’09 and Jon Merten ‘09 will lead a Tucker-sponsored team and work with Islamic Relief in New Orleans. “We are excited to return to the Gulf Coast after being there in the winter. “

Waite Powell

Daria Waite ’10 and Kristin Powell ’10 will lead an African American Society (AAM) team to the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana. They are involved in DACC, DBBA, AfricCaso, DREAM, and DBBA. “We would like to lead a trip to New Orleans and help out predominately black neighborhoods.”

Ryder Liscord

Abigail Ryder ’10 DMS and Emory Liscord ’10 DMS will lead a team of their fellow 1st Year Dartmouth Medical School students to New Orleans to work with Community Collaborations. “We are ready to involve the Medical School in important service work in the Gulf Coast.”

Laughlin Hoipkemier

Catherine Laughlin '09 and Mark Hoipkemier '07 will lead a team from Aquinas House to serve with the relief efforts of the Diocesan Office of Long Term Recovery in Gulfport, MS. “Integrating the gospel of Christ with concrete works of mercy, we will try and learn from the inside the truth of what Mother Teresa said, ‘The fruit of love is service; the fruit of service is peace.’"

Andrew Galloway '09 and Diana Jih ’09 will lead a Tabard/Panarchy team to New Orleans and work with Islamic Relief. “We want to establish a commitment to service in the two organizations that we will lead to continue work with Katrina Relief!”

Dovidio Degrazia

Michael Dovidio ’07 and Brian Degrazia ’08 will lead a Tucker-sponsored team. They are both involved in Sig Ep and various other groups across campus. “We are excited to lead a group of diverse group of students from the entire student community to the Gulf Coast.”

March 2006 Trip Information

Trip Dates: March 15-25, 2007 (Spring Break)

Mission

As a student-run initiative, we are dedicated to fostering reflective citizenship and compassion by serving and empowering communities in the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, through a sustainable and mutually beneficial collaborative effort.

Need

The infrastructure of the Gulf Coast communities has been destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, leaving hundreds of thousands of families displaced, and resulting in higher drop-out rates, an epidemic of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide, and the disruption of the delicate environmental balance, which has left communities feeling alienated and abandoned.

Basic Info

  • 9 trips during Spring Break
  • 2 trip leaders per team (one will serve as an assistant)
  • 10-13 participants; 12-15 person teams with trip leaders and participants

Trip Requirements

  • Trip leaders must go through Tucker application process
  • Trip participants approved by Tucker
  • Entire team completes training
  • Teams adhere to Tucker’s rules and protocol
  •  Each trip fundraises $1000
  • Each trip member must make $150 deposit (cannot be fundraised money); financial aid available, contact ‘Katrina Help’ to apply
  • No more than two teams working at each organization at a time
  • Organizations approved by Tucker

Types of Trips

Student-initiated service trips

Undergraduate students interested in organizing a trip can apply with friends. Tucker can provide assistance in recruiting. The trip leaders design the itinerary by selecting from organizations approved by Tucker or student suggested organizations approved by Tucker. 

Organizational service trips

A campus organization or two organizations co-sponsor a trip with Tucker. Teams are comprised of members of the organization(s). Open to any campus organization.

Tucker sponsored service trips

Tucker recruits student trip leaders and participants from entire campus. Open to undergraduate students and grad students.

Graduate student service trips

Graduate students organize with friends or graduate organization(s). Tucker can provide assistance in recruiting. Tucker approves trip participants and organizations.

Sara G. Fisher MALS '07 and Abbey L. Allen MALS '08 will be leading a Graduate Student trip to New Orleans. “Our project to gut houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina for displaced households involves us with Commonground Relief.”

Shaniqua Jones '10 and Sarah Peterson '10 will be leading the Student Assembly trip to New Orleans, LA.  “Our project to engage in activities that benefit the people of the greater New Orleans area involves us with the organization Hands On, New Orleans.”

Kahlie Dufresne ‘09 and Madhavi Menon ’09 will be leading a Tucker-sponsored trip to Biloxi, MS. “We will be working in conjunction with Diocesan Office of Long Term Recovery in Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi and will focus on helping them with reconstruction and rehabilitation of the area.”

   

Anna Bofa ’09 and Brent Drummond ’09 will be leading a Student-Led trip to New Orleans. “We will be working with Commonground Relief on revitalizing neighborhoods still recovering form the disaster.”

Sherry Zhao ’07 (above) and Jacques Hubert ’07 (not pictured) will be leading a Tucker-sponsored trip to New Orleans. “We will be working with Islamic Relief on remodeling residences and making provisions available to those in need of groceries and furniture.”
