It is the officers who plan and execute each of our Cross Cultural Education
and Service Projects. All of the officers are Dartmouth College
undergraduates.
Student Director – Community Development Team
The Student Director is responsible for coordinating the team, and
works closely with the Assistant Dean and Director of International Programs
Lynn White Cloud, the Dean of the Tucker Foundation, CCESP faculty advisors,
the non-governmental organization Bridges to Community, and with the fellow
officers and team members. He or she manages the team and organizes the
officers to ensure that the CCESP mission is implemented and that the
program runs smoothly. The Student Director plans each week's officer meetings
to review officer roles and plans for coming events during the fall term. In
the winter, the Student Director is responsible for administering and reviewing
team evaluations to improve and develop the future of the program overall. In
the spring term, the Student Director oversees the application process and
selection of next year's team, and he or she helps facilitate the transition
between officers. Only veterans may apply for the Student Director position for
the 2007 trip.
Position: Fall, Winter, Spring; 15-20 hours/week (most intense during the
Fall term prior to trip’s departure and during the spring application process);
student receives small stipend as compensation for hours worked; usually
participates on the Community Development team.
Chief of Community Health Team
The Chief of the Community Health team emphasizes the public health aspect
of the program and focuses on its sustainability. He or she is responsible for
designing a curriculum for public health workshops and forums. This
includes choosing the topics to be taught, organizing CCESP team members to
research and conduct workshop lessons, and compiling binders distributed to
community health workers. This officer works closely with the Clinical Health
Officer to plan training for the Community Health Team before the trip and
helps organize the team’s overall schedule and itinerary while in Nicaragua.
After the trip, this officer is responsible for collecting and compiling their
team’s evaluations and conducting a luggage inventory of team supplies once
on-campus.
Position: Fall; strongly encouraged to be on-campus Winter and Spring; 8-10
hours/week.
Clinical Health Officer – Community Health Team
The Clinical Health Officer oversees the organization of the clinic
while in Nicaragua. Before the trip in the fall, the Clinical Health
Officer is responsible for organizing the itinerary at the clinic. He or she
administers the Community Health Team Skills Day to train the Community Health
team with the help of the doctors and medical students in the medical skills
needed in clinic to do intakes and see patients. The Clinical Health Officer
oversees the acquiring and packing of all drugs, medical equipment, and public
health supplies needed for running the clinic. This student works closely with
the Chief of the Community Health team and the team faculty advisor to create
the schedule and itinerary for the trip, and establish specific goals for the
medical aspect of the program in conjunction with the CCESP mission. On
site in Nicaragua, this officer coordinates the functioning of the medical
clinic.
Position: Fall; 5-8 hours/week.
Chief of Community Development Team
The Chief of Community Development organizes the team Construction
Training Day, coordinates packing of team supplies, and establishes the
Community Development team’s itinerary prior to the trip. He or she coordinates
with Bridges to Community to plan the Community Development team’s project
while in-country. In Nicaragua, this officer acts as the team’s on-site
organizer, and continues to work closely with Bridges to Community staff. This
officer also works with the Community Health Chief and the Clinical Health
Officer to schedule days in which members from the Community Development and
Community Health teams switch to the other team. After the trip, this officer
is responsible for collecting and compiling their team’s evaluations and
conducting a luggage inventory of team supplies once on-campus.
Position: Fall; strongly encouraged to be on-campus Winter and Spring; 8-10
hours/week.
Educational Seminar TA & Reflections Officer – (One Team)
This officer organizes the pre-trip educational seminar for the team in
the fall term. The content of seminar aims to prepare team members for their
experience in Nicaragua, and thus focuses on the political, historical, social,
and economic cultures surrounding Nicaraguan life. Organizing the seminar
entails: selecting summer readings to be distributed before the fall term,
planning topics for each seminar class, inviting guest speakers and experts for
each, and proposing questions to facilitate team discussion. It is best if
guest speakers can be recruited and confirmed over the summer so that a
syllabus can be created before the start of the seminar fall term; this
position is probably ideal for a student who will be on-campus or otherwise
available to work over the summer, but is open to all students. The secondary
role of the position is that of Reflections Officer, mostly while in-country.
This officer plans and leads reflection sessions before, during, and after the
trip to Nicaragua by presenting readings and activities designed to inspire
introspection, self-reflection, discussion, and team-building.
Position: Fall, Summer encouraged; 5-7 hours/week.
Operations & Logistics Officer – (One Team)
The Operations and Logistics Officer is responsible for collecting all
necessary documentation (passports, IDs, emergency contact information, etc.)
and helping arrange transportation and accommodations. This officer is also
responsible for upholding all College policies and financial regulations
associated with the Tucker Foundation. In addition, he or she is responsible
for the safekeeping of the passports and transportation tickets; while
in-country, he or she is in charge of team finances and directs all team
travel. After the trip, this officer is responsible for luggage inventory
and helping with the final balance of his or her team’s budget.
Position: Fall, 5-7 hours/week.
Finance Officer – (Other Team)
The Finance Officer oversees the details of the budget and assists team
members in developing fundraising plans. He or she works with groups of CCESP
participants on organizing and executing specific fundraising projects.
This officer is responsible for sending fundraising letters out to potential
donors and providing fundraising templates for team members. He or she must
monitor team expenses and balance the overall CCESP program budget. The
Finance Officer also ensures that team members meet CCESP payment
deadlines. In Nicaragua, the Finance Officer directs team members while
traveling and keeps accurate records of money that is spent (like the
Operations & Logistics Officer, but on the opposite team). This
officer works closely with the Tucker Foundation’s financial office before and
after the trip, and prepares a financial report that compiles the program’s
expenses.
Position: Fall; 5-7 hours/week
Public Relations & Reflections Officer – (Other Team)
This officer is responsible for organizing a publicity event during fall
term and the Spanish training retreat, as well as writing press releases,
updating the CCESP website, and coordinating photography on the trip.
After the trip, this officer coordinates the writing of “Thank You
letters” that are sent to the trip’s financial donors. As a reflections
officer, he or she is the counterpart to the Educational Seminar TA, and
conducts reflections sessions for the other team while on the ground. He
or she also works with the Seminar TA to conduct reflections sessions at the
Team Retreat, during seminars, and at the re-entry session. This officer plans
and leads reflection sessions before, during, and after the trip to Nicaragua
by presenting readings and activities designed to inspire introspection,
self-reflection, discussion, and team-building.
Position: Fall; 5 hours/week
