English as a Second Language

Program Description

The ESL Project works with Lebanon School Districts to enhance their bilingual education program. The ESL program focuses on tutoring non-native English speakers, whose original languages include Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Khmer, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Farsi (among others). Students range from the elementary to the high school level.

You do not need to be fluent in a foreign language to volunteer to be an ESL tutor. However, language fluency can be helpful when working with some students. Tutors who do speak a second language may also be asked to serve as a translator during parent-teacher conferences.

Requirements

Time Commitment

  • Volunteers attend mandatory training and evaluation meetings and maintain contact with their student’s teacher.
  • ESL tutors volunteer weekly for a minimum of 1 hour.
  • Although not required, preference is given to students who will be on campus and plan to volunteer for at least 2 consecutive terms.

Transportation

  • If eligible, mentors are required to become driver approved.
  • In most cases, you will need to drive to the school your student attends. Advance Transit can be used, but Tucker cars are more convenient (available to approved drivers).
