Special Olympics

Too often citizens with disabilities are forgotten or neglected because people overlook their ability to do sports and to become physically active. Special Olympics has always provided memorable opportunities for success and victory. Join the growing circle where everyone is a winner and anyone can play.

The first Special Olympics Winter Games in the Upper Valley were held in 2003. Led by Dartmouth alumnus Peter Bleyler '61, the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley sponsored the first Upper Valley Regional Games. Later, the Special Olympics of the Upper Valley organization, encompassing parts of both New Hampshire and Vermont, was created, which lead to the Upper Valley Special Olympic games in their current form. By 2009, the Winter Games had grown to involve about 130 athletes on 11 teams from New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as about 300 volunteers.

Each year, Dartmouth students constitute a large part of the volunteer base for the Winter Games, as well as planning, managing and producing the Summer Games, held in May.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Join Dartmouth volunteers for Special Olympics's weekly bowling trip to the AstroBowl in White River Junction, VT.
  • Coach sports such as floor hockey and basketball.
  • Play a role in creating the Winter and/or Summer Olympics at Dartmouth.
  • Join local Special Olympics teams when they have the chance to attend regional and state tournaments and competitions.
  • Help the college's program continue its relationship with UV Special Olympics.

Time Commitment

  • Volunteers attend mandatory training and evaluation meetings
  • 1-2 hours weekly

Transportation

  • If eligible, volunteers are required to become driver approved.
  • Access to Tucker vehicles (after driver approval) is available.
