DREAM

Program Description

Directing through Recreation, Education, Adventure, and Mentoring was founded in 1999 by Dartmouth students seeking to form long-term, one-on-one relationships with children living in local subsidized housing communities. Today, DREAM continues to empower Dartmouth men and women to forge these relationships both on and away from the Dartmouth campus.

Every Friday afternoon, our “mentees” descend upon Hanover and spend two hours with their mentors, enjoying one-on-one time as well as group activities. Many mentors also make regular visits to their mentees’ home communities to lead Homework Clubs and host Community Dinners.  In addition, mentors take participants on once-per-term “Culminating” experiences, which in past terms have included trips to the Boston Museum of Science, Six Flags Great Escape, and the Franklin Park Zoo.

Requirements

Time Commitment

  • 2-4 hours of training after acceptance to program
  • Mentoring sessions every Friday from 3:45 to 5:45 on the Dartmouth campus
  • All day "culminating" trip at the end of each term

Transportation

  • If eligible, mentors are required to become driver approved
  • New mentors are required to become microbus and van certified
