Yom HaShoah
April 18, 2004

We remember what has happened
that has made prayer
for some of us
necessary
and for others of us
impossible.

Although we can never redeem
what has been done,
let us resolve
not to be silent.
but to raise our voices
whenever today
people – nameless, uncounted –
Are killed by bombs and guns and knives and flames.

An incomprehensible tragedy has occurred –
at least in part because no one, or few- spoke up.
They were afraid.
We are afraid.
Let us – both people who claim faith and people who have lost faith –
remember.
May our memory and their spirit
prompt us to speak –
to protest, to protect, to howl and not be silenced
when power demands our worship,
as it always does.
