Mission Statement
The mission of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life is to promote the
religious and spiritual life of all students and staff in the college
community.
Welcome to Spirituality at Dartmouth!
Chaplain Richard Crocker welcomes you to the religious community at
Dartmouth College. Although founded by Eleazar Wheelock and Protestant
Christians, Dartmouth now encompasses many faith traditions, and the Office of
Religious and Spiritual Life works to protect and promote religious diversity
on Dartmouth Campus. The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life acknowledge the
importance of religious faith, both in our individual and collective lives.
Furthermore, the office provides opportunities for members of the Dartmouth
community to express and explore their faith in the context of a supportive and
questioning community. The College supports numerous student religious groups
representing multiple denominations and faiths. The College Chaplain
coordinates a multi-faith council, composed of representatives from all
religious groups, to facilitate growth and understanding. The Associate
Chaplain is the College Rabbi and the Director of the Roth Center for Jewish
Life, which houses both the college Hillel organization and the Upper Valley
Jewish Community. The College Chaplain and the Associate Chaplain, as well as
the various campus ministers, are available to the entire community for
counseling and pastoral care as requested. Learn more

Religion at Dartmouth
That Tucker is the umbrella for so many different faith traditions is
incredibly important because it creates a space for those people to worship and
then also for kind of ecumenical dialog which is really critical in the world
today…that wasn’t happening as much when I was there, the notion of the kind of
cross religious dialogue. As the world becomes more religiously divided and
people become more religiously entrenched and as fundamentalism becomes more
and more an accepted expression of religious faith, understanding where other
people are coming from is really critical and Tucker really creates the space
for that to happen. So whether or not you’re promoting a particular faith, that
ability to talk with people who have different faiths I think is really
key.
