Sailing, Surfing and Studying

A group made up of five recent college graduates is about to set off on an 18 month sailing voyage around the world. The Ledyard Group, made up of 4 Dartmouth graduates -- Mike Litter, Jason Stern, Damon Tassone, and Michael Wexler along with Bates alum Kyle Kaufman -- take their name from fellow Dartmouth adventurer John Ledyard. The Ledyard Group has teamed up with the Surfrider Foundation, the Center for Marine Conservation and the Tucker Foundation's Surfer Guide Program to conduct research, organize conservation activities and provide educational programs.

The Surfer Guides will work with the Ledyard Group to create an internet-based education program for elementary and middle school teachers to incorporate into their classroom curriculum. Lessons will be closely related to the travels of the Ledyard Group. Examples of topics might include: the El Nino effect (while crossing the Pacific), Fires in Indonesia (while in Indonesia), weather prediction (related to how the group receives weather information via satellite), and the underwater world while scuba-diving in the Red Sea. We also hope that the web-site will contain lessons related to the different cultures that the group will be visiting. Classrooms will be able to communicate with the crew by e-mail while underway through a satellite e-mail system on their boat, First Light.

The Ledyard Group's vision is not only to make a positive impact on the environment, but also on the communities that they visit. The Surfer Guides are enthusiastic about allowing the group to visit many more communities through access to their web-site. Please look for information on the progress of the Ledyard Group at http://www.dartmouth.edu../../ beginning in the spring term.
