Alumni in Service Trip Planned for Summer
By R. Lance Martin ’05, Civic Intern

From July 12th through the 20th, 2003, the Tucker Foundation will sponsor an alumni service trip to Masaya, Nicaragua through "Bridges to Community", a not-for-profit organization that currently coordinates the Foundation’s annual student service trip to Siuna, Nicaragua. The alumni trip, which will include 18 alumni participants, Stuart Lord (dean of the Tucker Foundation), a Dartmouth professor, and two students, will allow interested members of our alumni community to play an active role in the Tucker Foundation’s commitment to service learning in Nicaragua. Participants will spend four days constructing a home with the "Friends of Masaya" building project, a 10-year campaign to end poverty housing in the Masaya area, which employs professionals and uses volunteers to help families who are still living with sub-standard housing after a number of devastating earthquakes hit the region in July, 2000. During the trip, participants will also have the opportunity to learn about Nicaragua’s cultural traditions from guest speakers, to tour the rainforest, to visit the market in Managua and to interact closely with the friendly community in Masaya.

The trip will cost approximately $1,500, excluding airfare. All travel coordination and literature regarding shots, lodging, trip preparation, and cultural awareness, will be sent to potential participants by "Bridges to Community". You do not need to know Spanish to attend, but participants need to be in good physical condition. Please contact Leann Bankoski at "Bridges to Community" <Brdgs2Comm@aol.com>, 914-923-2200) or Stuart Lord <Stuart.Lord@Dartmouth.edu>, 603–646–3889) for more information or literature regarding the trip.
