Civic Fellows "Raise their Voices"

The Tucker Foundation has four new student colleagues working campus-wide to promote civic engagement. Fawn Draucker '04, Diana Hwang '04, Jennifer Ross ’03, and John Stevenson ’05 have been appointed Campus Compact for New Hampshire Civic Fellows on the Dartmouth Campus, and are our first members of the national "Raise Your Voice" student campaign, "a campaign to unleash the voices and power of college students to begin conversations, address issues, and create solutions for the challenges facing our democracy." Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH) is the state subsidiary of the national non-profit group Campus Compact: The project for Public and Community Service in Higher Education. Campus Compact, working with student leaders, has initiated the campaign with a grant from the Pew Charitable Trust.

Dartmouth’s civic fellows will map existing opportunities on campus for civic engagement and report on the civic state of the campus, organize opportunities for discussion and student dialogue on issues of the public good and generally assist campus endeavors such as the Public Impact Initiative.

Fawn Draucker ’04 is from Pittsburgh, PA. She is a linguistics modified with film major and government minor. Fawn writes "I have had the opportunity to be a civic intern at the Tucker Foundation, which has provided me many opportunities to affect the community engagement of Dartmouth students. As a civic fellow, I look forward to continuing to engage the campus in more discussion on issues that are pertinent to our civic involvement and personal interest."

Diana Hwang ’04 is from the state of Texas. She is a declared sociology modified major, but is hoping to fit in an economics major too. She got involved as a civic fellow because "it's a great way to both support and facilitate campus discussion on issues important to us and our community. The civic fellowship program ensures that these discussions continue and it hopes to involve more people in the dialogue. I'm really excited to be a part of that."

Jennifer Ross ’03 is from Salem, OR and is a genetics and cell biology major. Jenny writes that "As a civic reporter I will investigate how the many organizations and offices on campus promote civic engagement and student voice. The Dartmouth Community has tremendous resources. I'm interested in communicating how they fit together and identifying areas where we can be stronger."

John A. Stevenson ’05 is from Louisiana. He is an international relations major in the Government Department, buttressed by minors in War and Peace Studies and religion. "I am a civic fellow" John Writes, "because I wish to map out and connect all the resources on campus in order to make civic engagement more efficient and ultimately, more effective. By mapping all the resources, and promoting awareness about them, I hope to encourage people to more fully live out their conception of the good life, whatever that may be."
