The Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) program allows students to spend an off-term working for a community service organization, school, or hospital. Members of the Class of '59 developed and currently fund the DPCS program, which began in the Summer of '96 and has since expanded to more than 40 internship opportunities with service organizations throughout the United States.
DPCS internships are similar to Tucker Fellowships in that they provide students the financial means to carry out non-profit work away from the security of campus life. One difference, however, is the mentoring component of the DPCS internships. The Spring 2000 Interns are listed below with a brief description of each Intern's individual project and mentor.
Devon Bonady '03 is working at a variety of agricultural tasks as well as in education and outreach to teach Dartmouth students and the local community about organic farming and sustainable agriculture with the Dartmouth Organic Farm in Hanover, NH. Melvin E. Hall '91 (and wife, Damaris) are Devon's mentors.
Janet Choi '01 is coordinating and supervising Dartmouth volunteers for the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Emergency Department in Lebanon, NH. Janet is also working with the injury prevention program for the community and local area schools. James W. Varnum Ô62 serves as Janet's mentor.
Devon Green '02 is working with lawyers in the Juvenile Rights Division of the Legal Aid Society representing children in neglect, abuse and juvenile delinquency proceedings in the city's Family courts in New York, NY. Matt Greene '90 is Devon's mentor.
Shannon Stoval '02 is tutoring and working in the early intervention and literacy programs at the Bar Nunn and Evansville Elementary Schools in the Natrona County School District in Casper, Wyoming. James and Ellen Thorpen MD '51 DMS '52 serve as Shannon's mentors. <
