'shmenCORPS 98 -- 02's Dive In

On September 21, more than 350 members of the incoming Class of 2002 participated in the second annual orientation week DarCORPS (Dartmouth Community OutReach ProjectS). The students joined College faculty, staff and administrators and upper-class team leaders in helping to serve the needs of the Upper Valley while venturing out to become acquainted with the communities surrounding Dartmouth College. The volunteers visited with residents of retirement communities, worked in community gardens, and performed a variety of tasks for local agencies, including painting, construction, clean-up, and entertaining shut-ins.

DarCORPS for orientation week, affectionately known as 'ShmenCORPS, was chaired by Zo‘ McLaren '00. 'ShmenCORPS serves several goals: introducing students to the Tucker Foundation and community service opportunities at Dartmouth, strengthening the bonds between Dartmouth and the community in which we live, and educating students about the breadth and needs of the diverse community around us.

After the service projects, all DarCORPS participants joined the Tucker Foundation staff for a barbecue, music and socializing. The success of DarCORPS this fall will continue to build the reputation of Dartmouth students as concerned and active members of the Upper Valley community. The enthusiastic response to the event suggests that 'ShmenCORPS is well on its way to becoming an orientation-week tradition.
