New Faces at Dartmouth Community Services

By Jan Roberta Tarjan

There are some new faces at Dartmouth Community Services (DCS), and some familiar ones that we are welcoming back for a second year of service, or in new roles.

Tucker will now have two volunteer coordinator positions to support the DCS programs. Uriel Barrera-Vasquez '98 is our newest volunteer coordinator. Uriel will work in partnership with Sarah Nolan '97, whom we are thrilled to report is staying with us for a second year. Uriel joined us in August, and he and Sarah have already become the "dynamic duo" of DCS.

Uriel was born in Columbia, came to the United States as a young child, and spent much of his younger years in Jersey City NJ. and Waterbury, CT. Uriel was extensively engaged in community service before coming to Dartmouth. At Dartmouth Uriel held several officer positions, including President of La Alianza Latina. He served as the Administrative Intern in the Office of the Latino/Hispanic Adviser and was a minority recruitment intern in the Office of Admissions. Uriel was coordinator for the Dartmouth Perspectives program for admitted students, and still found time for an off-campus job, to be a tour guide, Chairperson of COLORS, as well as membership in Amarna, Casque and Gauntlet, and the Bildner Grants Selection Committee. He is an amazing tennis player and avid music devotee.

Betsy Eaton, Administrative Assistant for DCS, the first face one saw upon entering Tucker, and the welcoming voice on the DCS phone, has left us and will be missed. We congratulate Betsy on her fantastic new "dream job" as the Librarian for the town of Lyme, NH. We are delighted to welcome Karen Harkins as our new Administrative Assistant. Karen is experienced being on the friendly front lines as a meeter and greeter of the public from her days at a local inn. She has acquired significant financial and administrative skills in other positions, most recently with the Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth. Karen is a Hartland, VT resident, where she volunteers with the local Recreation Department, coordinating a Christmas program for children and as an athlete and leader in the local volleyball league. She also enjoys quilting, knitting, spinning her own wool, making her own butter and cooking.

Our next report is of a familiar face in a new role: Marilyn Sturman, who has served as Administrative Assistant to the Rabbi for four years, will move on to new responsibilities at Tucker. Marilyn will serve as the first point of contact for visitors to the Foundation, both in person and via telephone. Marilyn will also provide administrative support to the Administrative office of the Foundations and to Jan Tarjan, Associate Dean and Director of Dartmouth Community Services. Marilyn brings and outstanding level of knowledge of the Foundation and the College as well as a long history of volunteering. In the town of Thetford, VT. where she and her family reside, she has served in substantial roles for the library, the schools and the recycling program. Marilyn is also a board member of the Skating Club at Dartmouth.

Finally, "back by popular demand," both Tucker and the Upper Valley community are happy to welcome back Wendy Barbour Chapman to a second year of service as our AmeriCorps member. Wendy returns courtesy of a successful grant to Campus Compact for New Hampshire and the Learn and Serve/AmeriCorps programs of the Corporation for National Service. Wendy's energies will ensure continued success for our Leadership, Encouragement And Development project (LEAD), BookBuddies, and other projects.
