Amnesty International plays a specific role within the spectrum of human rights work, advocating fair and prompt trials, opposing death sentences and torture, and seeking the release of "prisoners of conscience": people who are detained for their non-violent expression of beliefs or opposition to discrimination. The Amnesty International Student Group promotes human rights education in the Dartmouth community and thus creates awareness of human right violations around the world. Its commitment arises out of the belief that "only when people are made aware of the various human rights violations will they be able and willing to act in defense of the fundamental rights of all people."
Students and members of the Dartmouth community explore issues of conscience through open dialogue, debate and socially responsible action. Amnesty's mandate, on which we base our own work, is derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the basic UN human rights document. Other United Nations Agreements on Human Rights are available on the comprehensive and highly informative Human Rights Web.
