Project Bangladesh is different from other philanthropic causes because it is a truly student-run initiative. Dartmouth graduate Matt Sueoka '04 designed the plans for this orphanage as his senior honors thesis, and with the help of the Tucker Foundation of Dartmouth College, Dartmouth students have committed to raising the necessary funds. Once the orphanage is under construction, Dartmouth students will commence annual service trips to Bangladesh to implement health and education programs at the orphanage.
The orphanage currently houses 100 orphans and twelve teachers, but sadly, the 100 orphans share one toilet and lack any means of running water. They have no place to play and no area to study. With such inadequate space, seven orphans must share one bed with one bedcover. As one of the only concrete buildings on the island of Bhola, the orphanage also provides an emergency shelter for the 2,000 surrounding villagers of Bhola during the monsoon season. However, the orphanage has been battered by harsh weather conditions and is in critical need of reconstruction. The orphanage is on the brink of collapsing, and an immediate reconstruction is crucial.
I believe that Project Bangladesh is an exciting and innovative way to help the boys at the orphanage and the people of Bhola Island for decades to come. We are hoping to raise $200,000 by June of 2006 and I believe that your organization could be instrumental in helping us meet that goal.
