Katie Sullan is from Morrison, Colorado and is a competitive freestyle skier. She trains and competes in Winter Park, Colorado during the winter term, and attends school during the summer. While on campus, Katie trains with the Dartmouth Women’s Alpine Team, and is a sister of Kappa Delta Epsilon. During her freshman summer, Katie began volunteering for Little Kids LEAD, a student run Tucker Foundation organization. The program allows Dartmouth students to work with and mentor children from first to sixth grade from Romano Circle, a government housing development, near West Lebanon.
During the summer of 2003, with the help of the Tucker Foundation administration and the community coordinator of Romano Circle, Wendy Barbour, Katie serving as a co-chair of the program, facilitated a restructuring of Little Kids LEAD to insure its continued success. Katie has learned that through community service one can learn a great deal about themselves, and about the community around them. Little Kids LEAD has provided her with the opportunity both to create a relationship with her mentee, and to experience what must go into a program in order to maintain its goals and allow it to grow in a positive direction.
