Matt Sueoka '05

Matt Sueoka, hailing from Orinda, California is a member of the Varsity Men’s Swim Team and has an interest in architecture and business. After chairing Operation Insulation, a Tucker Organization that focuses on home repairs for disadvantaged Upper Valley residents, and working for two leave-terms with the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings on a project that combined his passions for architecture, construction, and service.

With the help of Dean Stuart Lord of the Tucker Foundation and Professor Francis Kennedy at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, Matt initiated an architectural design thesis to create a new facility for the Char Fassion Orphanage on Bhola Island in Bangladesh. The current orphanage facility, deteriorating from severe damage during natural catastrophes, is unsafe for human habitation and must be replaced immediately. The orphanage plays a crucial role in ensuring the education, health, and safety of 100 boys local impoverished villagers with free meals. Additionally, the fortified walls of the orphanage function as an emergency haven for the 2000 surrounding inhabitants during the destructive annual monsoons and flooding that destroy homes and claim many lives.

Matt will be designing a new site layout for the facility and providing architectural drawings, along with materials and construction recommendations for the orphanage. Matt will also be fundraising with Dean Lord during the spring of 2004 when the design is complete to guarantee a means of implementing the project – to ensure that new facility becomes a reality for the orphans.
