Marzuq Muhammad '05

Marzuq Muhammad is from Boston, Massachusetts and since his freshman year has been active in a number of organizations throughout the Dartmouth community. One of Marzuq’s primary involvements began his freshman spring, when he assisted in the Office of Fellowships and Internships at the Tucker Foundation. In this capacity Marzuq worked to help plan and organize the Cool Movement Summit, a three-day conference focused on educating and mobilizing college students to strengthen their communities through service and action.

His involvement in SEAD began in the spring of his sophomore year, as a member of the SEAD II planning committee. The SEAD program is a summer enrichment program for high school students, which promotes academic preparedness and personal growth. His involvement with the SEAD program deepened when he became a mentor during his sophomore summer. As a SEAD II mentor Marzuq was able to explore his passion for working with youth and through this he experienced a true sense of fulfillment. Since his experience with SEAD Marzuq has decided to spend his junior winter in the Marshall Islands, where he will be teaching in a local high school.

His most recent project involved work with the Deep Community: Diversity that Unites Us retreat. This was a two-day workshop focused on building communities by recognizing and embracing diversity. Workshops were aimed at deconstructing social identities to build a framework for understanding social oppression. This was done through examining emotional literacy. The workshop also addressed underlying principles of human growth and liberation with the goal of creating an authentic diverse community.
