Leigh Heeter ’04 is from Kansas City, Missouri and is a Psychology and Women and Gender Studies double major. She has been a chair of the Tucker Foundation’s Little Kids LEAD mentoring program, as well as a member of the Dartmouth Decibelles. She is also the Philanthropy Chair of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and is a two-time DOC Trip Leader. During the winter 2003 term, Leigh worked as an intern at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, as part of the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Intern program which is an alumni supported program partnered with the Tucker Foundation. During this internship, Leigh researched, planned, and implemented outreach, prevention, and education programs in the Bay Area. She worked as an operator on the nation-wide California AIDS Hotline, providing resources, referrals, and counseling for callers.
Leigh was awarded a Tucker Foundation Fellowship for the summer 2003 enabling her to continue her HIV/AIDS advocacy work in Cape Town, South Africa. She worked with the Treatment Action Campaign, a program whose goals include preventing new HIV infections, as well as working towards providing effective, affordable treatment options for all HIV-positive South Africans. “During my fellowship, I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to the Treatment Action Campaign's National Congress in Durban (South Africa.) It was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was such a powerful demonstration of solidarity and support--hundreds of voices joining together to express their respect and appreciation for each of the speakers and what they had so say.”
