Tico Blumenthal D'02 Th'04

Tico Blumenthal D’02 Th’04 is pursuing a Master of Science In biomedical Engineering at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and is from Santa Ynez Valley, California. Tico founded the Dartmouth chapter of the national Engineers Without Borders organization in order to give engineering students an opportunity to bring the theory they have been learning in the classroom to bear on real-world problems. With its own bylaws and organizational structure, Dartmouth Engineers Without Borders (D-EWB) has a substantial degree of autonomy, but benefits from the national organization’s mentoring, networking, and advisory capacities.

The Sinua Water Project, the first official D-EWB project focuses on the pressing need for drinkable water in the city of Sinua, Nicaragua. The short-term goal for this project is to provide a source of drinkable water for the students of URRACAN, a university in Sinua. In the long-term, the goal is to be able to scale and broadly apply the solutions developed the URRACAN throughout Sinua. This project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between Dartmouth’s Tucker Foundation, students at URRACAN, Brides to Community, and D-EWB.

D-EWB’s vision for the future involves a continued commitment to the community of Sinua, organizational growth, and a commitment to education in service for the students of Dartmouth College.
