January 2006 Volunteer Spotlights

Dartmouth Community Services presents our January 2006 Volunteer Spotlights.....

Kaherine LangKatherine Lang

Big Brother Big Sister

Katherine Lang '06, Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) chair for the past two years, has selflessly nominated all three other BBBS chairs for Volunteer Spotlights without recognizing herself for all her own hard work and dedication. Her "engaging personality" and "fun-loving nature" make her a very pleasant person to work with. As fellow BBBS chair David Cao says, "Seriously though, she is an awesome person." When asked about BBBS, Katherine expresses her gratitude for the program. It gives her the chance to spend her time with someone who is not college-aged while at Dartmouth and to see her little sibling "grow up before your (her) eyes."

Andy RandAndrew Rand '07

Special Olympics

Andrew Rand '07, chair of Special Olympics for the past two years, has helped turn the program into a huge success. As an active and involved leader, he has helped to triple the number of active volunteers. He does not mind taking time out of his day to check in on volunteers and athletes and handle the logistical paperwork. Fellow Special Olympics chair Daniel Villone shares how he is proud to participate in the program with Andy because Andy's "diligence and passion to this project reflects his caring and selfless nature." When asked about Special Olympics, Andy says that he is honored to take part in a program which offers developmental disabled athletes "an opportunity to run, jump, laugh, be a teammate, and enjoy life to the fullest."

Nick BonacciNick Bonacci '07

Special Olympics

Nicholas Bonacci '07, Special Olympics volunteer since last summer, bowls with developmentally disabled athletes every week. In his time with the program, Nick has recruited new volunteers and helped to make practices more enjoyable for athletes and parents. Andrew Rand, chair of Special Olympics, says that Nick "promotes good sportsmanship among the athletes and brings smiles to their faces with his great sense of humor."  When asked about Special Olympics, Nick cites it as "one of the most rewarding experiences I've (Nick has) had" because it allows him to spend time with "fun-loving, caring" people. He also mentions Big Brother Big Sister as another program, which has had an impact on his Dartmouth experience.

Max YoungMax Young 06

Haven Homework Club

Maxwell Young '06, Haven Homework Club volunteer, previously acted as chair for the program and has continued to stay involved since. As a consistent volunteer who drives others to the Haven on a weekly basis, Max is loved by all the kids there. Claudia Rueda, Haven Homework Club chair, tells of stories where kids argue about who Max is going to sit next to. Claudia says, "I think being the object of affection of little kids can say a lot about a person." When asked about Haven Homework Club, Max says it is something he looks forward to every week. According to Max, it is "one of the few community service organizations of which I have been a part that I believe really makes a difference."
