Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth Program Announces New High Schools for 2006-2008

HANOVER, NH, January 27, 2006—The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) Program is delighted to announce its partner high schools for the next three years.  The thirty 2006-2008 SEAD Scholars will come from Stevens High School in Claremont, NH;  Noonan Business Academy in Dorchester, MA;  the Bronx Center for Mathematics and Science in New York, NY;  Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, SC; and El Cerrito High School, in El Cerrito, CA.

“We are very, very excited by the selection of these diverse high schools,” said SEAD Program Director Jay Davis.  “Both the schools and the Dartmouth community will be enriched by the long-term partnership.”

Founded in 2001, the Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth Program (SEAD) expands the educational opportunities for promising high school students from selected under-resourced urban and rural schools, while offering the Dartmouth community a unique opportunity for service learning. Co-sponsored by the William Jewett Tucker Foundation and the Education Department, SEAD offers its high school students academic preparedness and personal growth through specially designed courses, year-round mentoring, and extensive interactions with successful college students. For its Dartmouth staff and volunteers (over 1000 Dartmouth students have been involved with the program), SEAD offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn with others from different, and often challenging, life experiences—learning at the core of a rich liberal arts education.

SEAD Scholars will spend their summer sessions taking classes in humanities and science, math and technology from master teachers on campus, being mentored by Dartmouth undergraduates, exploring the wilderness of New Hampshire and Maine, writing college essays, preparing for admissions interviews, and living with students and staff from around the country.  These students will return to campus each winter for a five day Reunion Weekend, co-sponsored by Hanover High School.  Additionally, Dartmouth will send an undergraduate intern to each of the SEAD schools during three consecutive winters to provide support to its students as well as its partner schools’ academic and counseling departments.  Further information is available at www.dartmouth.edu/~sead
