Psychiatry Department Volunteer at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland

The mission of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is to provide compassionate health care that is focused on the uniqueness and dignity of each person they serve by offering this care in an environment that promotes, embraces and honors the diversity of our global community. The organization works with patients of all ages, regardless of geographic locations, and through a combination of outpatient clinics, day hospital programs, mobile treatment and on-site school programs to fill the need of increased access to quality psychiatric care for all community members. Lindsay will be working alongside psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, during both in- and out-patient procedures, and assisting in clinical research studies. She will also aid in addressing the functional roots and most effective treatment plans for disorders such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's, and substance abuse. Lindsay's experience as a Staff Member of the GlobeMed Dartmouth Chapter has strengthened her resolve that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right and compelled develop a link with a grassroots organization in Thailand to promote global access to health. At Dartmouth, Lindsay is part of the Kappa Delta Epsilon Sorority and a member of the Academic Skills Advising Program.


Jingxi (Emily) Li '14jli

"Refugee Patient Navigator" at Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights in Boston, Massachusetts

The mission of the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights is to provide free and accessible health care for asylum seekers, refugees, survivors of torture, and their families. The organization connects their clients with other social services and legal aid organizations and engages in research and advocacy to promote health and human rights. Emily will be working as a Patient Navigator in the Refugee Patient Navigator program to assist with new client orientation and provide patients with resources about the health care system. She will be administering surveys with new clients, helping guide them through the services available, and helping determine their needs. Emily's experience working as the Walk of Hope Intern for Ovarian Cancer Canada has inspired her to spread knowledge about healthcare to offer uncompromising service to her peers. Through this internship, Emily wishes to further develop her skills to effectively communicate with patients from diverse backgrounds and address healthcare issues in a broader social justice context. At Dartmouth, Emily serves as a Presidential Scholar for the Dartmouth History Department and also is a Study Group Leader and Tutor for the Dartmouth Tutor Clearinghouse.

Nayrana Carneiro '14ncarneiro

"Health and Wellness Department Intern" at Esperanza Health Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The mission of the Esperanza Health Center is to provide affordable, quality, bilingual primary health care and support services to their patients. The organization works to provide holistic care to their patients across multiple settings and coordinate the care of their patients even when it is sought outside their doors for external hospitals or specialists. Nayrana will be working as an intern to assist patients by educating them about their health conditions. She will also be responsible for reading to children while they wait in waiting rooms through the Reach Out and Read program and for organizing literacy type games. Through this internship, Nayrana wishes to serve underprovided patients and really impact their lives. She wishes to learn more about the issue of health care and complications that many people must go through due to the lack thereof. Nayrana understands that health care is a right and not a privilege and hope she can be involved in such a great cause through her involvement with the Esperanza Health Center. At Dartmouth, Nayrana is a Researcher at the Geisel School of Medicine Genetics Research Lab and also co-found Dartmouth's chapter of the non-profit organization, She's The First, that aims to sponsor underprivileged girls to be the first to graduate in their family.


Natalie Flowers '14nflowers

Major: Environmental Studies, Minor in Public Policy
"Sprouting Healthy Kids Program Intern" at Sustainable Food Center in Austin, Texas

The Sustainable Food Center is non-profit organization that focuses on promoting healthy communities in central Texas by giving communities access to local food systems and educating about the importance of nutritious foods. It aims to maintain several programs focusing on organic food gardening, interactive cooking classes, and nutritious education to increase the access to healthy, local foods. The NGO also serves local farmers and connects to hospitals, schools and worksites in the area. Natalie will be focusing primarily on the Sprouting Healthy Kids program as an intern. Natalie will spend most of her time promoting "hands-on" education with both gardening and cooking aspects to two area 2 middle schools. She will also connect with elementary schools and document their garden use and determine needed improvements. Natalie's experience as a Farm Intern at the Field Day Farms allowed her to find her passion for environmental studies, inspiring her to learn more about local food systems and the importance of market access in smaller communities. At Dartmouth, Natalie works as a Sustainability Intern at the Dartmouth Office of Sustainability and also as an Admissions Tour Guide.
