Tucker Fellowship Info and Procedures

Tucker Fellowships provide committed Dartmouth undergraduates the opportunity to invest in their personal growth and liberal arts education by serving others in need. Students apprentice themselves to an agency or organization serving the welfare, development and fulfillment of other human beings. Files of community service organizations are maintained in the Fellowship & Internship Resource Center on the second floor of the Tucker Foundation. Students are also encouraged to seek out new organizations with which to work.

In every instance, an agency or organization must be located before a Fellowship application can be submitted. The Fellowship Review Committee feels that personal growth, one of the goals of the Fellowship program, takes place to a higher degree in an environment where there are a large number of new, challenging experiences for the student. Independence within the Fellowship is highly valued. Therefore, Fellows are not permitted to work or reside in their hometown or the Upper Valley, and the Committee does not favor projects that are done in partnership with good friends. Intentional moral and/or spiritual exploration and growth is an essential component of a Tucker Fellowship. When constructing a Fellowship plan, candidates should consider how they will build a moral and/or spiritual element into their experience.Calcutta

To be eligible for a Fellowship, candidates must submit a completed application by the appropriate deadline. Two letters of recommendation are required; one from a Dartmouth faculty member, and one from anyone who knows the student personally—a high-school teacher, a past or present employer, a dean or a friend. Letters of recommendation from Tucker staff members are not permitted. A CSO Supervisor’s Statement of Agreement signed by the person who will supervise the Fellow's work during the term is also necessary and should be submitted with the candidate’s application. All application materials should be sent to Lynn C. White Cloud, Assistant Dean, Director of Fellowships and Internships at 6154 South Fairbanks Hall, Hanover, NH 03755-3568 or to HB 6154.

Students on campus or off campus are responsible for confirming that all application materials have been received by the Fellowship and Internship Resource Center on the day of the deadline. Because Tucker Fellowships applications far exceed funding capacity, no deadline extensions can be offered.

A Review Committee, usually consisting of the Director of Fellowships and Internships, Program Coordinator for Fellowships and Internships, another College staff member, and former Tucker Fellows, will interview all applicants. Deadlines for application are generally mid-term during all terms. Students who are off-campus during the appropriate review term may arrange for an interview even though they are off-campus. All deadlines will be posted in the Tucker Foundation, in The Dartmouth and around campus.

Funding support accompanies each Tucker Fellowship. Fellows receive up to $3000 in support for an international project. Students receiving need-based financial aid may be eligible for additional funds for the relief of financial barriers. Occasionally, students have felt that they could afford to support a large share of their own expenses. We are grateful to such individuals for allowing more funds to remain for awarding more fellowships.Calcutta

A ten-page reflection paper is required from the student at the end of the Fellowship experience and is due on the first day of the term following the Fellowship term. The papers will be read by the Director of Fellowships and Internships and will form the basis for a one-on-one interview with the returning Fellow. A group discussion meeting for all Tucker Fellows returning that term will also be required. The Tucker Foundation makes an effort to continue to involve Fellows in Foundation programming after their return.
