Education and Youth
Empowerment at Creator Junior Secondary School and Ghana Youth Leadership
Alliance (GYLA)
Tema, Ghana
Class of 1954 Fellowship Recipient
Emmanuel will be returning to his home country of Ghana to teach science,
math, and French at Creator, a rural elementary school. In addition to
teaching, Emmanuel hopes to motivate his students to get involved in Ghana
Youth Leadership Alliance, a youth empowerment NGO he co-founded in 2006. GYLA
initiates leadership workshops within school systems and also facilitates
mentor/mentee partnerships between Ghanaian students and their peers in U.S.
colleges.
Emmanuel hopes that these partnerships will encourage youth in Ghana to
excel in school and give them confidence to assume "leadership positions that
will enable them to execute their vision of a better society." Ultimately,
Emmanuel sees his fellowship as a way to give to others what he did not have:
"I did not have such an opportunity when I was at that stage of my life and as
such I hope to give these students the opportunity to become true leaders in
their respective communities."
