Yang Lu '10

Yang Lu '10Education Development Project
Gyalthang,Tibet

Yang will be going to Tibet with a Dartmouth alumnus to volunteer with a program that focuses on English-language studies and the development of an English text book for Tibetan children. For the first part of Yang's fellowship, she will be a master drill instructor and will teach English and Chinese in a summer school. In teaching her English and Chinese classes, Yang will be using the popular Rassias method, which she learned at Dartmouth through her trainings over the past year. The second part of Yang's fellowship is working on the development of an English textbook for Tibetan students. Yang emphasizes how important it is that this textbook be different from other English textbooks for Chinese students, and says that "it will be written in the context of Tibetan culture and life."

In order for Yang to gain a greater understanding of Tibetan culture, she will be traveling throughout Tibet to do research for the textbook. Yang has a long-term investment in her project and will be continuing her work on the textbook when she returns from her fellowship. Though Yang has a great deal of work ahead of her, she is very enthusiastic to "engage with the local community, observe the daily Tibetan life, and learn about Tibetan culture."
