Julissa Llosa '10

Julissa Llosa '10Sexual Health Educator at Awaiting Angels
Cusco, Peru

Julissa will be working with the small Peruvian organization of Awaiting Angels, teaching sexual health in the rural area of Cusco, Peru. Julissa's duties will include a good-deal of local travel as she visits high schools, mother's clubs and street-kid's centers as she presents on topics such as STDs, reproductive health, homosexuality, sexual health issues and teen sexual health. Part of Julissa's educational presentations will include compiling information on sexual health resources, such as information on where to go for STD and STI testing. In addition to her educational sessions, Julissa will also be making herself available for private sessions and will draw on her skills as a Sexual Assault Peer Advisor.

As Julissa explains, she hopes that "teaching sexual health in Cusco will allow me to develop my identity as an activist." She looks forward to "learning about Peruvian indigenous culture, while promoting indigenous, LGBT and reproductive rights." Julissa, who emigrated to the United States from Peru when she was 11, sees this fellowship as an opportunity to learn more about her own personal history as well. Julissa hopes to gain a greater understanding of the complexity of the Peruvian people and culture, which would, in her words, "allow me to help myself, while helping hundreds of others."
