Treasure Center for
Sisters of Rwanda
Kigali, Rwanda
Class of 1996 Fellowship Recipient
This summer Samoneh will be volunteering with Sisters of Rwanda, an
organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of prostitution in Rwanda by
ending gender-based violence and empowering women. Samoneh's involvement will
include working on the HIV/AIDS program, assisting in the nutrition program,
and aiding with the health education program. Samoneh and the of Sisters of
Rwanda share the conviction that if women are healthy, educated, and given
employment opportunities, prostitution will no longer be their last resort to
generate income.
It is Samoneh's hope that "by volunteering with this organization, I will be
helping these women regain their place in society through culturally accepted
occupations like jewelry making. This will help to lower the stigma associated
with the prostitutes: failure and disease." Samoneh's life of travel and
humanitarian work has motivated her to pursue service in Rwanda, and she hopes
that "the small steps that I am taking here at Dartmouth and in Rwanda this
summer, will affect the lives of the sisters and their children. These women,
who clutch the wind in search of hope, will find that every journey is possible
and endless."
