Unite for Sight
Tamale, Ghana
This summer Sarah will be working with Unite for Sight at the Tamale
Teaching Hospital in the Northern region of Ghana. In preparation for her
fellowship, Sarah has been collecting and identifying the prescriptions of
hundreds of eye-glasses which she will be taking with her to Ghana to
distribute to the community. While in the hospital, Sarah will be doing a
number of different tasks including taking patient histories and screening
patients for vision deficiencies and eye diseases. In addition to her
independent work at the hospital, Sarah will also have the opportunity to
observe cataract surgeries. Throughout her fellowship, Sarah and her team will
have the opportunity to travel to smaller, rural villages and provide care to
those who cannot access the hospital.
It is Sarah's hope that her ophthalmology work will not only be of direct
benefit to the patients, but that she will also help them re-enter the
workforce and lessen the burdens on their families. For the future, Sarah
explains her hopes that her efforts in Ghana "will set an example for other
volunteers and provide a long-lasting eye care education program 'template' for
other volunteers to follow in future years."
