Sulayman Kunkumg General Hospital VolunteerThis summer Ijeoma will be working in the newly established Sulayman Kunkumg General Hospital in the Gambia in efforts towards improving community health. During her fellowship, Ijeoma will be focusing on the prevention of diseases that plague the local community, including providing HIV/AIDS education and sessions on malaria prevention. In addition to Ijeoma’s educational outreach, her time spent within the hospital will allow her to aid doctors and nurses in their work with patients. As Ijeoma explains, “I was raised with a strong sense of my Nigerian culture and identity, so becoming involved in the development of African nations has always been important to me.” Ijeoma is considering a career in medicine and is interested in “Doctors Without Borders” and similar programs involving medical work in the international arena. As she embarks on her fellowship this summer, Ijeoma hopes that the experience will help to inform her future career plans and solidify her commitment to medicine in developing countries.
