Community Health Volunteer
Mancora, Peru
Kathryn's will be using her fellowship to work alongside Peruvian doctors in
Mancora's community health-care clinic. As she assists the doctors in their
daily tasks, her work will embody Kathryn's strong belief in public, accessible
healthcare. Kathryn, an experienced and certified EMT who teaches First Aid
classes while at Dartmouth, will be incorporating her unique skills into her
fellowship. Kathryn believes in "helping people help themselves," and she will
be teaching First Aid and CPR classes at a local high school which will be open
to the public.
While Kathryn's assistance in the clinic will help in solving current health
problems, it is Kathryn's hope that by teaching First Aid and CPR she will be
providing sustainable help. As Kathryn explains, she sees her fellowship not
only as a chance to "fix the current health problem, but also teach people how
to help themselves in the future." Kathryn hopes that after this fellowship she
will pursue her career in medicine with a more informed awareness of the health
care problems that confront developing countries.
