In a survey provided to organizations in the Upper Valley,
here are some of their responses when asked about further development in
resource- or revenue-development projects, and outreach and/or communications
in their organizations.
Stern Center for Language and
Learning:
The Stern Center wishes to expand its service to learners, families, and
education, medical, child-care professionals in the greater Upper Valley
region. The need for our literacy services of evaluation/instruction,
professional development and research has become clearer throughout southern
Vermont and New
Hampshire.
As part of expanding our service depth in the Upper Valley Region we hope to
develop a network of Stern Center Friends to help establish a broader community
sense of the Stern Center as an educational resource to the community and its
public and private education and medical systems.
Upper Valley Business Education
Partnership:
UVBEP wants to review its Partner School fee structure which has not changed
since we incorporated in 1999, despite significant changes in program scope and
impact. In addition, we want to research and suggest alternative sources of
funding for schools to cover their fees. We also want to adjust our corporate
funding levels to offer more opportunities for giving to specific initiatives.
Our Advancement committee is just beginning to brainstorm ideas for moving
forward with both issues.
UVBEP initiated a Community Outreach committee this year to explore school
administrator relations in an effort to sustain partnerships with schools. We
also want to create a regular newsletter with program spotlights for our
stakeholders. While these are two specific outreach/communications projects, we
also want to create an overall outreach/communications strategy.
Center for School Success:
Need to collate and evaluate learning "trends" we have collected over past 5
years and create way to present findings (posters, charts, graphs). Also would
like to create a database of customers and donors and increase the
organization's networking structure.
We are a small organization with limited capacity to pursue the outcomes of
our work despite our desire to do so. One project might include having a
student serve as an "outside" impartial evaluator who visits the schools we
work with and interviewing teachers to learn which elements of CSS work have
been most beneficial.
Vermont Institute of Natural Science:
Certain new environmental education programs (e.g., teacher professional
development) require up-front investment in content development and marketing
before they can be launched and begin to earn steady revenue through fees and
sponsorships. We often pursue such content development and marketing work on
"nights and weekends," which prolongs the launch period for the new
programs.
VINS has established Outreach Presentations for stimulating interest in our
formal environmental education programs among school children and their
teachers. We're not sure these presentations are always the best, most
cost-effective way to communicate with these target audiences. We are
evaluating alternative outreach/communication projects that may be more
effective.
Hubbard Brook Research Foundation:
Research on foundation grants and on development software
systems.
Newsletters, both web based and paper; other reports.
Upper Valley LandTrust:
We would like to develop a visible annual fundraiser, perhaps a point to
point trail run or hike.
We need to more fully develop our website and establish an integrated
e-newsletter.
Grafton County Senior Citizens
Council:
Inadequate staffing for marketing and development--a promising corporate
sponsorship program, updating the website, following new leads for
fund-raising...
Regularly updating the website!
BONNIE CLAC:
We need to develop additional relationships with nonprofits to have them use
Bonnie CLAC's expertise to buy cars and have lacked the capacity to be able to
implement this service.
Bonnie CLAC needs to communicate better with our target low income and
vulnerable individuals. This will help us develop new business and come closer
to becoming self sustaining
Twin Pines Housing Trust:
Grant-writing, grant research, other.
Revamping our membership structure and communicating that to
constituents.
Student Conservation Association:
As a national nonprofit based in the UV, we always have needs to pursue
projects that will increase awareness, outreach and revenue in the region.
Specifically, we are currently building a high performance facility for which
we need to secure underwriting for various green elements especially from area
businesses.
As with the above question, we can use help focused on increasing awareness
and understanding of our organization's role in the area. With the construction
of our LEED building we would like to have an educational curriculum developed
and delivered on our website illustrating the benefits of high performance
buildings.
