Prison Project

Student Quotes

"Prison Project is unlike any other volunteer organization out there. It attracts such a bold, compassionate, diverse group of people and teaches you so much about growth. It would be a real eye-opener to any Dartmouth student."

Program Description

  • The Windsor Correctional Facility is an all-female minimum/medium security prison that is located about 30 minutes from Dartmouth in Windsor, VT.  Dartmouth students are encouraged to team teach a course in areas of interest.
  • Video project filming the women reading children’s books.  This footage is then edited by volunteers and transferred to DVD and sent to their children as a “bedtime story”.
  • Past class subjects range from "Poetry Groups" to "Current Events" to "Starting a Business”.
  • Some students also work with the inmates in the arts; for example teaching dance or visual arts classes.
  • The ultimate goal of the project is to create an opportunity for change. Residents gain self-esteem, motivation, and confidence through the tutor's individual attention. The tutor may enable a woman to recognize her self-worth, and in turn, help her return to a more productive and stable life.
