First Book

Program Description

  • First Book is a national non-profit organization founded in 1992 with a simple mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.
  • The primary goal of First Book is to coordinate ongoing book distributions with existing community-based tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy programs.
  • Through fundraising, affiliations with mentoring and education programs, and First Book National, Dartmouth's First Book board distributes books to low-income children throughout the Upper Valley.

Focus Areas

  • Assistance in planning, logistics, and organization of book distributions
  • Interactions with children receiving the books.

Time Commitment

A minimum of 30 minutes a week.  Opportunities for one time volunteers are available.
