English as a Second Language

Program Description

  • The ESL Project works with the Lebanon and Hanover School Districts to enhance their bilingual education program.
  • The program focuses on tutoring non-native English speakers, whose original languages include Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Kmer, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Farsi (among others).  Students range from the elementary to high school level.
  • You do not have to be fluent in a foreign language to volunteer to be an ESL tutor.  However, language fluency can be helpful when working with some students.
  • Tutors who do speak a second language may also be asked to serve as a translator during parent/teacher conferences.

Focus Areas

Tutors can elect to work at the high school, junior high or elementary level.

Time Commitment

  • Volunteers attend mandatory training and evaluation meetings and maintain contact with the project chair-person and their student’s teacher.
  • ESL tutors volunteer weekly for a minimum of 1 hour (including travel).
  • Although not required, preference is given to students who will be on campus and plan to volunteer for at least 2 consecutive terms.  This helps foster meaningful relationships between tutors and their students.

Transportation

  • If eligible, get driver approved ASAP!

(In most cases, you will need to drive to the school your student attends.  Advance Transit can be used, but Tucker cars are much more convenient, and only available to college approved drivers.)
