Dartmouth College Cancer Society (DCCS)

We are a Tucker organization that works in conjunction with the Norris Cotton Cancer Center to help those who are temporarily weakened by cancer treatments and need assistance with a variety of outdoor and indoor work.  Job requests are filled out and placed in the designated locations at DHMC, and the volunteer coordinator at the Cancer Center forwards the requests to the DCCS blitz account.  Members are then informed about the job; the work, address and time are coordinated and confirmed, and students travel to the sites on a Saturday or Sunday.  DCCS is a great way for students to get involved with the community, make an impact in the Upper Valley and form lasting relationships with other students.

Focus Area

The Dartmouth College Cancer Society is committed to providing assistance to cancer patients and families in New Hampshire and Vermont.  Our goal is to positively impact the areas around us by offering our services to the community.  DCCS is a service oriented organization that not only helps those affected by cancer, but also aims to increase awareness of cancer and its prevention around campus.

Transportation

Students will travel to job sites in groups, usually in vans provided by the Tucker Foundation.  It is highly recommended that students get driver approved so that more people can take part in the service trips.

Volunteer Commitment

There are usually about 5-6 service trips per term.  Our goal is to do sitework at least bi-weekly, weather permitting, in addition to any other various educational or advocacy jobs we might have on our agenda.  Students are recommended (but not required) to take part in all the service trips.  Of course, the schedules will vary depending on the number of requests recieved, but trips usually take place on Saturdays.
