"My book buddy and I have formed a great relationship that we are both benefiting from. Not only is his reading improving, but we are becoming better friends each time we meet. Talking and reading with him is often the best part of my week." Julia Noether
By
spending an hour a week reading with a child you can make a big difference in his or her future. This unique and nationally recognized program encourages children to discover the joy of books within the home environment and at local libraries. A Dartmouth student volunteer is matched with a child who has been referred by a teacher, counselor, or parent and does the following:
- Focuses on reading appreciation within the child’s home environment and other safe educational places like the public library.
- Models fun with books and other reading related activities.
- Establishes a one-on-one relationship with an elementary school child that includes the building of trust.
- Reads with children in grades K-3 who are experiencing difficulty with reading.
Volunteers
must attend an information, orientation, and training session to learn about strategies and techniques to engage children in reading related activities.
Volunteers commit to spending at least one hour a week for a minimum of two terms with a child.
