Averill Park, NY

Tucker Fellowship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; volunteer with Growing Change (current); member of Community Based Learning class at Ledyard Charter School
What else are you involved in on campus?
SAPA, volunteer at Ledyard Charter School, planning committee for Dartmouth on Purpose, Cover the Globe
How have your Tucker experiences affected you?
I think my Tucker experiences have really helped me connect how my education at Dartmouth is shaping the kind of person I want to be in the world. Furthermore, the work I have done as Tucker has reminded me that as a college student I do not live in a vacuum and there are ways I can create positive change in the lives of the people around me every day, on campus and in the Upper Valley.
You're going to serve as Student Director for Communications at Tucker for the upcoming year. Why did you decide to apply to Tucker and what are you looking forward to doing next year?
I have always loved the quote in the living room of the Tucker Foundation that talks about students graduating from Dartmouth with as much conscience and heart as they have knowledge. I wanted to be a part of the Tucker leadership so that I could help foster that ideal as a core campus value here at Dartmouth.
What would you say to a student who is trying to get involved at Tucker?
I would say to really think about what it is that gets you excited. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to look at a list of activities and opportunities and it can be tempting to stretch yourself thin. I believe it is much more worthwhile to do one or two things really well, and that we do our best work and are our most devoted selves when we truly love and believe in a project.
What is one fun fact about you?
As a child I lived in Finland for a year and learned to speak almost fluent Finnish, although I don't remember any of it!
*Emily, along with two other Tucker Student Leaders (Neil Bhatt and Matt Sattler) received early acceptance to the Geisel School of Medicine this spring! A written article congratulating Emily, Neil and Matt was published in the June 2013 edition of Tucker Points.
