Jim Coulter is a Founding Partner of TPG Capital, L.P. ("TPG"), one of the world's largest private equity firms. The firm was founded in 1992. TPG is a leading private investment firm managing in excess of $48 billion in assets in more than 35 countries.

TPG is based in San Francisco and Fort Worth and has 14 offices in 10 countries around the world. TPG has been a lead equity investor in more than 100 companies including; Beringer Wine Estates, Burger King Brands, Creative Artist Agency, Continental Airlines, Debenhams, Del Monte Foods, Ducati Motorcycles, IMS Health, J. Crew Group, Lenovo Group Limited, MEMC Electronic Materials, Myers Department Stores, Neiman Marcus Group, ON Semiconductor, Oxford Health Plans, PETCO Animal Supplies, Punch Taverns, Seagate Technology. Prior to co-founding TPG in 1992, Coulter began his career at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb. In 1986, hejoined Keystone Inc., a private equity firm formerly known as the Robert M. Bass Group.

Coulter serves as a member on numerous corporate and charitable boards; including J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Creative Artist Agency, IMS Health, and the Vincraft Group. He also actively serves on the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees, the Stanford University Board of Trustees, Common Sense Media, and the San Francisco University High School. Historical boards include America West Holdings Corporation, Northwest Airlines, Inc., Lenovo, Oxford Health Plans Inc., Genesis Health Ventures, Inc., GlobespanVirata Inc., the San Francisco Zoological Society, the Bay Area Discovery Museum, and the San Francisco Day School. Coulter is a 1982 Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College. He went on to receive his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar.
