Introduction to the Newsletter

Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Gamma Gamma chapter Tri Delta Newsletter! The goal of the newsletter is to put our current members, parents, and alumnae in contact with each other in the hope of developing a better sense of our Tri Delta community.  The newsletter is published twice a year, at the end of Fall and Spring terms.  ~Current Gamma Gamma Chapter News~

For this issue of the newsletter, we asked each Officer to write a short blurb on what they have been up to over the last few terms. Read on!

Chapter Development Team

VP Chapter Development – Lauren Wondolowski ‘04

These past two terms TriDelt has continued to grow and chapter development has received attention in many areas.  We initiated 48 new members between winter and spring rushes and welcomed the class of 2005 into our sisterhood with open arms.  A “big sister” sponsored each initiate and the interaction was extended this year as big sisters attended new member activities, discussions, and events with their little sisters.

While much time was spent focusing on our new Deltas, the spring was truly dedicated to our wonderful Class of 2003.  "Pansy Week" provided younger sisters with an opportunity to honor the 03s as they surprised them with secret treats like cookies, pansies and goodies from the Delta Shop.  Revelations occurred after the Circle Degree as younger members joined in congratulating the seniors.

In the next terms we are hoping to bring a focus back to our "Tea Talks" and "Fireside Chats" as we bring in professors and administrators and offer sisters the opportunity to introduce favorite members of the community to the Chapter.  We are also looking to provide more opportunities for discussion within the Chapter as sisters share past experiences, thoughts, etc.

Continuing Education – Lindsey Aponte ‘04

The beginning of the term brought new challenges and responsibilities for the position of Continuing Education, per the request of national.  One of the responsibilities of the position is to recognize our seniors. With this in mind, ‘Seniors of the Week’ was started. The basis of what will hopefully become a weekly tradition is to acknowledge the profound impact that our seniors have had not only in Tridelta but also in the Dartmouth community at large.  Each Sunday, I email the house to inform them of who the seniors will be in that week and request that they send me anything they know about each senior.  It mainly focuses on the seniors' accomplishments (e.g. member of the soccer team, president of the Class of 2003, intern at the Tucker Foundation, etc.).  Then on Wednesday, at the beginning of meetings, each senior of the week is presented with flowers and her accomplishments shared with the chapter.  This is meant to be a time to celebrate the diverse achievements of our sisters.  I hope to continue this in the fall with a few new additions.  All in all I would say it was a huge success – sisters participated in sharing people's accomplishments and seniors felt honored, as they should.

Administration Team

VP Administration – Heather Kiefer ‘04

Many enthusiastic sisters have helped to plan excellent events in the past two terms.  The highlight of winter term was the Indian Culture Night organized by Reena Dutta ’04, Sudeshna Chatterjee ’05 and Sejal Vashi ’05 who taught their sisters traditional Indian dance.  Also, Abby Tassel, Dartmouth’s sexual assault advisor, mediated an interesting gender discussion with the brothers of Chi Gam and Chi Heorot.

So far this spring, several sisters helped cook lasagna for the AIDS Progressive Dinner hosted at the house.  In early May, Jen Rackliff ’04 arranged for the Native American drumming group Occum Pond to perform for sisters to get everyone ready for the Pow Wow.  At our last event of the spring term, the sisters supported Lindsay Orchowski ’03 and Ally Basak ’04 with a very large cheering section at their spring SHEBA show.

Secretary – Laura Roche ‘04

As the Secretary, I attended and took notes at the officer's council, chapter meetings, and Ritual so that Tri Delta can maintain accurate written records of our Chapter.  Having accurate records also helps to keep the Sisterhood informed and up to date on their chapter. Attendance at Chapter meetings and participation in House activities this Spring was very good.

Membership Team

VP Member Development – Ingrid Swanson ‘04

With the addition of the ’05 pledge class, the past two terms have seen immense growth in the numbers of sisters, strengthening our chapter with fresh energy and enthusiasm. To celebrate the growing sisterhood, we all gathered for the New Member Retreat, celebrating with a lasagna dinner, a night of singin’ ‘n dancin’ in West Lebanon, and a conclusion of movies, snacks, and a slumber party.  The snow and cold didn’t hold back our sisters, as many Deltas came together and spent multiple hours helping to build the snow sculpture on the green for Winter Carnival ’03.  Later in the term, in conjunction with Culture Night, a few of our sisters shared their cultural dance and food with us. The evening was capped off with a sisters-only “game night,” as we relaxed together and spent time getting to know each other and the new members.

We celebrated the start of spring term, the advent of warm weather, and a visit from our field consultant, with a sisters-only barbeque.  In mid-April, the chapter held its first ever “Open Meetings,” focusing on sisterhood – a great success! The night, enjoyed by all, centered around a rousing game of intra-class charades! As the term wound down, the house began to prepare for the graduation of a strong and supportive senior class.  In order to commemorate all of their contributions to the house, the evening of ‘Bequests’ was made into a more formal celebration including dinner and presentations.

VP Membership – Megan McCullough ’04 and Amanda Posner ‘04

Rush this year was a huge success.  Our winter pledge class was one of the largest and most dynamic groups with 37 girls.  Our spring pledge class is smaller, with 11 girls, but just as great.  This spring's party themes were 'Double-O-Delta', complete with James Bond attire, and 'There's no Place like Home' from the Wizard of Oz.  Our sisters’ enthusiasm, creativity, and amazing cooking and decorating efforts impressed rushees.  We're looking forward to another great rush next winter, but it will be hard to build on this year's success.

Alumni Relations – Kelly Cameron ‘04

This spring I have been busy preparing to send off the seniors and keep our records up to date.  On May 24 we held the Circle Degree Ceremony for the seniors.  We were able to reinstate the ceremony this year with the help of the TriDelt Seacoast Alumni Association.  Two alumnae came down from Plymouth, NH to initiate our seniors from collegiate Pine members and into alumnae Pansy membership.  The alumnae brought homemade cookbooks from their chapter for each of the seniors with all of their favorite recipes.  The ceremony took place at the end of Pansy Week during which Secret Tridelt Little Sisters treated the seniors with little presents such as decorated picture frames and pansies.  Senior Molly McIntosh even planted her pansies in front of the Tridelt house.  Following the ceremony the whole chapter was invited to join the seniors and alumni for tea and treats.  Next year if alums are in the area and would like to take part in the ceremony please blitz me and we will keep you posted.

As the alumni relations chair I continue to update the Alumni Database and keep the website current.  Over the past year the website has had a makeover with new layouts, new pictures, a calendar, and a special section just for alumni to keep in touch with the chapter.  Check it out at www.dartmouth.edu/~tridelt.

Financial Team

VP Finance – Becky MacDonell ‘04

We are working toward the goal of every sister remaining in good standing in the chapter by more strictly enforcing the 30-60-90 deadlines.  In addition, we hope that the new budget will allow for more sisters-only events and increase our ability to support cultural and philanthropy events on campus.  To support our programming and campus events, we would hope that both our alumnae and family members would consider sending any modest donation, with checks being made payable to Delta Delta Delta Fund.

Treasurer – Joanna Lins ‘04

During the spring term, I dealt with financial issues for the formal and the senior dinner.  Formal costs included Bates Mansion, buses, a DJ, and appetizers for before the dance.  Senior dinner costs include tent, table, and podium rental, and the catered meal.  TriDelt pays for seniors, but their family members who attend the dinner are asked to pay for themselves.  Overall, the term was financially sound.  All members paid their dues, although promptness with payment could be better. It is something that I am aiming to improve in the next few terms.

Public Relations Team

Philanthropy – Ali Kelley ‘04

After the busyness of rush died down in the winter, we had some time to finally start projects!  In early February we had 16 sisters volunteer to work at the Red Cross Blood Drive.  Sisters ran tables in Thayer and Collis where they encouraged students to sign up to give blood.  TriDelt also publicized the event by making large posters for Collis and Food Court – the first poster was rejected because it was too graphic and realistic (we have some good artists), but we got it on the second try!  Mid-February was vacation week for local school districts.  We had 9 sisters join in the vacation fun by attending a "Girls are Great" Girl Scout day camp.  Projects with the Girl Scouts included arts and crafts, visiting the Montshire Museum and jazzercise!  In late February we had 13 sisters help out the Nathan Smith Society in their "Daffodil Days" sale to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

One of our biggest projects of the term was "volunteer with a sister."  In TriDelt, we have some community service all stars, who are very involved in or even run programs such as DREAM, Big Brother Big Sister, LEAD, and Book Buddies.  To help sisters learn more about the different programs that TriDelts are involved with, we had sisters accompany other sisters in their volunteer projects.  Ingrid Swanson ‘04 had lots of help reading to her book buddy.  Katie Brown ‘03 (our previous Philanthropy chair) had sisters spend time with her DREAM mentee.  Sarah Stein ’05 and Rachel Navarro ‘03 had help at a START event.  Kate Strayer-Benton ‘05 had sisters come along to the Big Brother Big Sister pool party.  Laura Berzak ‘04 had sisters help her organize a conference on "Planning for College Success."  Overall, it was nice for sisters to see a bit of what fellow TriDelts are involved in and care about.  Finally, as we all know, no TriDelt philanthropy term seems to be complete without some sort of bake sale or excuse to make cookies.  In turn, we baked up a storm of desserts for the volunteers and the participants at the CHAD Ski Day Fundraiser.

Risk Manager – Jen Rackliff ‘04

We held two events at the house during the spring.  One was a sexual assault defense discussion with S&S Officer Rebel Roberts.  She came to the house and discussed methods to avoid sexual assault and the circumstances in which it occurs.  The second event that we had was an eating disorders awareness/discussion panel.  Four sisters served on it including President Kate Minikel '04, VP Membership Ingrid Swanson '04, House Manager Molly McIntosh '03, and Social Chair Jac Strife '04.  Many topics were discussed ranging from diet suppressants to changing the mentality of men and women about how a woman should look.

Panhell Representatives – DeAnna Fernandez ’04, Gina Ferrie ’04, Allison Swindell ’04

As Panhellenic Council representatives, we attend weekly meetings with members and presidents of the other five sororities on campus. Our goals are to organize events to support affiliated and non-affiliated women.  This spring term, Panhel has helped plan many campus-wide fundraising and social events.  Panhel sponsored a very successful diversity training workshop with SALAD (Seeking Alliances Through Leadership and Diversity), helped organize many dynamic speakers for Sexual Awareness Month, and coordinated an informational event for prospective freshman during Dimensions Weekend, with sisters from all the houses speaking about their experience in the Sorority system.

Other highlights of our programming are Spring Rush, Greek Week, and the TriDelt Car wash for CHaD (Children's Hospital at Dartmouth).  Spring rush was extremely successful this year, with 77 girls joining houses.  Tridelt is proud to have initiated eleven new girls into the chapter.  Greek Week was an 8-day event with each Sorority sponsoring a program or philanthropy event.  TriDelt women raised $150 to go to the children's fund at CHaD.  Culminating Greek Week was the inter-sorority flag-football game.  Panhel created t-shirts, and there was a lot of competition.

Looking ahead to the summer, Panhel will be well represented by TriDelt, with Neha Kulkarni ‘05 as the Vice President.  Tri Delt has been very active in the Panhellenic council, and we are looking forward to Panhellenic events in the coming terms.

Social Events – Emily Pearl ’04 and Jac Strife ‘04

For the winter we had a Superbowl party with SAE.  Lots of food and fun!  Over green key weekend the house had a busy social calendar.  The weekend started off with a barbeque with the brothers of SAE with yummy shrimp and burgers.  On Friday night sisters were able to mingle with the PsiU brothers before the band Rock Kandy played later in the evening.  We also had a mixer with the brothers of Chi Heorot, and a marriage themed event with the brothers of ChiGam earlier in the term.

Formal Chair - Priti Rao '04

Following tradition, our spring formal was held at Bates Mansion in Cavendish, Vermont. Hors d'ouevres were served at the house beforehand and the buses promptly picked us up 6:00 pm. We arrived at Bates, and after a few rounds of picture taking dinner was served. Despite the rainy, cold weather Tridelt sisters seemed to have no problem dancing all night to DJ Rockin' Lou.

Tridelt Intramurals

This spring Tridelt entered a team into the soccer and softball intramural leagues.  The Pines were eliminated fairly early on in the soccer league, but were very successful with softball.  Emily Murray ’03 motivated the team to victory, despite unsportsmanship-like conduct by Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority during regular season play.  In the championship game, Tridelt triumphed over Kappa with the winning team pictured at left.  The Kappa’s left with sad faces because they had grossly underestimated the Tridelt force and had prematurely announced their victory.

New member Eve Russell ’05 was announced the team’s MVP and hopefully will continue to lead Tridelt to more Intramural glory in the coming years.

1972 Society Program – Allison Swindell ‘04

As the Co-Chair for next year, I would like to introduce a very exciting addition to Dartmouth life that has been in planning and will be implemented in Fall 2003.  The 1972 Society Program is new program for undergraduate women that was conceived of by five amazing seniors, including two Tri Delts, Katherine Rue '03 and Katie Brown '03.  Named after the first year of co-education, the 1972 Society Program is founded on the premise that women can benefit from closer connections to other women.

The 1972 Society will bring women together in an environment of mutual support, understanding, and friendship.  Through organized group activities led by seniors, the 1972 Program will facilitate discussion and allow for the sharing of experiences between Dartmouth women.  Although specifically created to welcome first-year women to Dartmouth, the 1972 Society will provide opportunities for social and educational development, leadership, and community service for women in all classes.

Another Tri Delt, Megan McCulloch '04, will join me and three other women to make up the 2003-2004 Executive Committee.  I am extremely excited to be a part of what we hope will become a strong Dartmouth tradition that will enrich the experience of women on this campus.
