ToxFAQs
for Nickel This site on nickel, in a "frequently asked
questions" format, was produced by the Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a division of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services. The mission of the ATSDR is "to
prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished
quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances
from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution
present in the environment." The FAQ is one in a series of summaries
about hazardous substances and their health effects. Site includes
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's most
frequently asked questions about nickel Includes phone contacts
for additional information and a listing of related resources.
WebElements
Periodic Table: Nickel Includes extensive information
on the chemical properties of nickel, from the simple to the
complex. Designed for students and for curious, somewhat science-savvy
citizens. Includes geology, bond enthalpies, and uses, and details
properties, compounds, and interdisciplinary value.
The
Nickel Page Compiled by the Nickel Producers Environmental
Research Association, or NiPERA, this site is intended to provide
information on the use and properties of nickel and the safe
use of nickel in the workplace. Explanations are thorough but
written in an accessible style. Site includes a searchable database
of public documents and news bulletins that did not work when
we last tested the page.
Nickel
Statistics — USGS Minerals Information The
United States Geological Survey provides this information page
on nickel. The page provides a sound overview of the chemistry
of nickel, and its ore types, consumption, and uses. Also included
is a large list of reference materials, mostly web-based, for
production and consumption statistics over the past few years.
Nickel
in the Environment and Health — Health, Environment,
and Work The Health, Environment, and Work web
resource page is maintained by a professor of Occupational
and Environmental Medicine at the University of Manchester
[http://www.man.ac.uk/]. This page outlines the chemistry,
sources, health effects, and risk reduction of nickel. This
is a quick reference page, with very few additional resources.
Human
Health and the Environment — Nickel Development Institute
The Nickel Development Institute is an organization focused
on developing nickel, but its Health and Environment page
is straightforward. There is a wealth of information on how
nickel affects the environment and human health. The "Basic
Scientific Issues" section contains three papers about
ecotoxicity, cancer, and dermatitis; the "Health Guide"
is an enormous resource on the reduction of nickel exposure
in the workplace; and there is quite a bit of technical literature
as well. The language is not as simple as some pages, but
less technical than others.
