The Berry and Baker families donated over $30 million in 1992, the largest single gift ever received in the College’s history, to construct the new Berry Library and renovate Baker Library. The new Berry Library opened in September, 2000, and integrates library and technology services together within one space. Included in Baker-Berry is the Novack Cafe, public computer work stations, multimedia production and teaching facilities, 24-hour study space, a diversity of group and individual study areas and more. Baker-Berry provides access to a major research collection within an open stack system, allowing students to browse through the collections. The beautiful Tower Room overlooks the campus green. providing a cozy space to study and a popular reading collection.
Downstairs in Baker is the Reserve Corridor where students can check out reserve readings for class. Along the walls are the famous Orozco Murals. Painted by Mexican muralist and painter José Clemente Orozco in 1932-34 while he was an artist in residence, they depict the turbulent history of North America. The murals are considered by many to be one of the finest forms of expressionist art in North America.
The most important resource found in all the libraries on campus is its staff, who are ready to assist students in answering any questions they may have ranging from course assignments, term papers and research methods to effective searching techniques using online resources and the Internet. The librarians are active in teaching the use of the library to students both in the classroom and on an individual basis.
Sanborn Library and Carpenter Hall are on the west side of the library.
