Gilman Life Sciences

The Gilman Life Sciences facility houses the Biology Department and its classrooms and laboratories, and the Dana Biomedical Library. Gilman also contains a large greenhouse located on the top floor with an extensive orchid collection. Dana Biomedical Library houses over 200,000 volumes and 2,000 biomedical periodicals. It is a major medical resource center for Dartmouth students and others in the region.

Fairchild CenterThe Sherman Fairchild Physical Sciences Center houses the Environmental Studies, Geography, Physics and Astronomy, and Earth Sciences Departments. Geography is the study of place, and is field that bridges the natural and social sciences. Dartmouth is the only Ivy League school with a department of geography.

Kresge Library is located between Steele and Wilder Halls, in Fairchild, and houses all physical sciences materials. The Environmental Measurements Laboratory is located in Fairchild and is maintained by the Environmental Studies and Chemistry Departments. Students can research acid rain, toxicity, and chemicals in drinking water.

Opened in 1992, Burke Laboratory is the home to the Chemistry Department. Burke is a state-of-the art, multi-million dollar facility that includes an electronic shop, a magnetic resonance laboratory, instructional and research laboratories, tissue culture labs, and seminar and computer rooms.

The Thayer School of Engineering is located in the southwestern corner of campus in Cummings Hall. The school offers undergraduate degrees in Engineering Sciences as well as Master of Science, Master of Engineering Management and Ph.D. degrees.

Women in Science Project (WISP)

This program, developed in 1990, has successfully increased the percentages of women enrolled in science courses and the number of women who elect science majors. First-year women can receive funded research internships with professors, and all women students can participate in career workshops, discussion groups, panel discussions, field trips, and a mentoring program.
