The Dartmouth Free Press
A Glimpse of Blasphemy

Published in Issue 6.9

[Ed.--In the paper version of the Free Press, we printed 12 Danish cartoons along with the disclaimer below. We have not placed the cartoons on-line, as this would have contradicted our stated purpose.]

he cartoons below, originally published in a small Danish newspaper with right-wing ties, have swept through the Islamic world leaving riots and deaths in their wake. Any pictorial portrayal of Muhammad is controversial amongst Muslims, but the irreverent, provocative, and, to many, offensive nature of the Danish cartoons made them a particularly ripe target for ire and frustration. The Dartmouth Free Press in no way endorses the opinions expressed in these cartoons, but as they have developed into a controversy of international proportions, we believe that the Dartmouth community deserves to see them in order to better understand the emotions they have stirred.
