Director of theatre and opera; playwright and actor. Has directed plays by Euripides, Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Brecht, Chekhov, Williams, Miller, Wilder, August Wilson, Lorca, Athol Fugard, Mamet, Feydeau, Wendy Wasserstein, Ayckbourn, Terrence McNally, Yasmina Reza, John Logan, John Henry Redwood, Philip Hayes Dean, Aphra Behn, and many others. International opera credits include productions at La Scala, Paris Opera, NYC Opera, Glimmerglass, Teatro Real Madrid, Tokyo, San Francisco, Vancouver, Cape Town, Boston Lyric; the works of Verdi, Bizet, Mozart, Bellini, Kurt Weill, Benjamin Britten, Copland, Poulenc, Gilbert & Sullivan, Gershwin and others. His production of PORGY & BESS at NYC Opera, broadcast on PBS Live from Lincoln Center, was nominated for an EMMY Award for Best Classical Production and Best Direction. At NYC Opera he directed Toni Morrison's first opera, MARGARET GARNER. As a playwright his play CONSTANT STAR has had 16 national productions garnering 9 Barrymore Awards, 5 NAACP Awards and 3 Carbonell Awards. He has commissions to write plays for Lincoln Center Theatre, Arena Stage, South Coast Rep and People's Light & Theatre Company. His play MARY T. & LIZZY K had its world premiere March 2013.
