The Times They Are ‘A-Changin’

In the TGM’s first editorial, Jeffrey Kemnitz ’03 wrote that he wanted the publication to evolve as “the face of environmentalism at Dartmouth.” Well, welcome to evolution.
For those of you that don’t know, TGM used to be published once a term as an 8×11.5 magazine. By switching over to a more conventional tabloid format, we’ve freed ourselves up to publish once a month instead. In addition, I’m hoping to make TGM more political and more topical.
Peoples’ perceptions of the environment are changing: climate change is front-page news in The New York Times, over-development in Louisiana was a primary cause of the destruction in New Orleans, oil is at least part of why the US is in Iraq, and China’s protecting its environment with authoritarian force. Even here in sleepy Hanover, NH, environmental issues are affecting our daily lives. Think about how much you pay to fill up your car and then remember that Dartmouth has its own oilchugging power plant.
Dartmouth understands this. It’s why the administration created the position of Sustainability Coordinator. It’s why the student body rallies behind projects like the Big Green Bus. It’s why Amory Lovins, a leading expert on energy economics and policy, filled not only Filene auditorium but also two rooms of overflow. And it’s why the Green Magazine is changing to give you a better view of “the face of environmentalism at Dartmouth.”
